The Taxcast: Systemic racism, reparations and tax justice, Segment 1

2 months 3 weeks ago
We look at the United States and how tax justice can help address systemic racism. Plus: did you know Britain’s slave owners compensation loan was only settled by the government in 2015 on behalf of taxpayers? Faulkner wrote: “The past is never dead. It’s not even past.” As we discuss, the legacy of centuries of institutionalised racism is that a wealth chasm has been created between black and white communities. We also know that the City of London in Britain built its wealth from slavery and empire. Still today, major finance sectors have extractive business models which impoverish some of the world’s poorest nations. And, financial secrecy is another form of empire. So how can we think about combining tax justice and reparations? Keval Bharadia‘s work on a super tax on the $8 trillion a day financial markets could help show the way. And all financial institutions must have independent slavery money audits. For those financial institutions now coming forward and offering what they’re calling reparations funds, how do we ensure that these funds are large, they’re targeted to the right places, and they’re ongoing? Featuring: Cortney Sanders and Michael Leachman of the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities David Sorenson of the People’s Tax Page John Christensen of the Tax Justice Network Produced and hosted by Naomi Fowler of the Tax Justice Network

Radio Curious: President Jimmy Carter – Life After the Presidency, Segment 1

2 months 4 weeks ago
The Virtues of Aging Considering the alternatives, growing older is really not all that bad. The frame of mind that we develop and carry with us as we age controls much of how we feel and behave. James Earl Carter Jr., more often known as Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the US, is the author of a book called, “The Virtues of Aging.” President Carter’s book covers issues from Social Security and medical expenses to the importance of staying active and involved. I spoke with President Jimmy Carter by phone, in the fall of 1998, and I asked him what prompted him to write the book. President Jimmy Carter recommends “The Age Wave: How the Most Important Trend of Our Time Can Change Your Future,” by Ken Dychtwald. Originally Broadcast: December 4, 1998

Donald Drumpf Theatre: Donald Drumpf Theatre Volume 180_Oklahoma, Segment 1

2 months 4 weeks ago
An original radio theatre show each week, with most sounds culled from the previous week, about a fictional, theatrical presidency. Contradictions tell the story, with songs, skits, and clips from political news shows and late-night comedy routines. The definition of "radio theatre" is stretched here, with an updated Dickie Goodman and/or Richard Foreman-meets-mashup style sometimes, and a more straightforward take other weeks. Currently airing on 30 or 40 stations around the world, the network has ordered another 6 months of episodes. Anyone who would like to work on a production, or have their work air in this timeslot, should contact info@wgxc.org.

Taylor Report: Putin calls for steps to preserve UN integrity and world peace, Segment 1

2 months 4 weeks ago
Putin recently authored a long article on the lessons of the 75th anniversary of the defeat of Nazism in WWII. He is calling for a meeting of leaders of the P5 countries, indicating that there is a serious problem affecting peace and stability in the world. He writes that the three wartime leaders of the Allied powers laid down a mechanism for the greater powers to maintain peace for 75 years. The veto of permanent members of the UN Security Council are the only reasonable alternative to a major conflict between great powers, who should seek compromises instead. Calls for eliminating veto powers would reduce the UN to the League of Nations irrelevancy. Moreover, Western media failed us completely on Putin's speech. This was an important essay by a major world figure calling for collective action at this critical moment.

2 months 4 weeks ago
Human beings are nothing if not innovative. We have invented entire disciplines concerned with design, sustainability, and urban planning. Now, however, a global pandemic is forcing experts in these disciplines to rethink, adapt, and re-innovate. This week on Sea Change Radio, we speak to design expert and environmental journalist Lloyd Alter about innovation and adaptation in the COVID-19 era. We talk about the hurdles we are collectively facing when it comes to things like sky scrapers, air conditioning, and commuting - things that people, including experts, not too long ago took for granted.
