3 months 3 weeks ago
Hosted by Mike Roots, “Reggae Explorations” on Wednesdays from 1:00p to 3:00 PM, is WAPJ’s longest running show, having its start (as “Positive Vibrations”) at the station’s inception in March of 1997. On “Reggae Explorations” you’ll hear a mix of tracks from newer and lesser known artists, classic tunes, and deeper cuts than you would normally hear elsewhere. In addition, you’ll be treated to the “Motherland Track of the Week”, an occasional “Lovers Rock Set”, and even selections from off-the-beaten-path. Mike Roots is a reggae artist and reviewer, and brings an inside perspective with interesting facts to enhance the listening experience. Tune in to “Reggae Explorations” for your weekly excursion into the world of strictly conscious, roots and culture, reggae music.

The Sonic Cafe: Sonic Cafe #55 - Twilight Zone Classic: The Lonely, Segment 1

3 months 3 weeks ago
Sonic Café. Welcome to another Twilight Zone Classic. I’m Scott Clark. This time listen for excerpts from The Lonely… which aired originally in 1959. We like it because it explores two contemporary themes. First, as we confront earths overcrowded future … 9.7 billion people estimated by mid-century… we examine the opposite … namely, what would it be like to be totally alone in the most extreme solitary confinement imaginable … and the challenge of holding onto sanity in that situation. And second… with the mind-blowing developments in robotics and artificial intelligence in our modern era, this episode confronts our future by examining the fine line between human and machine intelligence and asks the question… at what point do machines earn the same right to exist as we do. Wow … all that along with a music mix that puts the whole thing in context… as we present radio that makes you pay attention. This time on another Twilight Zone Classic … here at the Sonic Café.

Takes on the World: Pierre Laboissiere on Haiti, Aristede and History, Segment 1

3 months 3 weeks ago
Four days before the 26th anniversary of the first US instigated coup against Haiti’s first democratically elected president, Jean Bertrand Aristede, Pierre Laboissierre, describes the emergence of the Lavalas movement and of a priest of the people, Aristede, as their leader. In this interview, Laboisierre takes the listener back into the history of Haiti’s revolution the success of which threatened all of the slave holding regimes including the United States and the icon of its own “revolution,” Pres. Thomas Jefferson, himself a slaveholder. Laboissiere refers back to Haiti being forced by the colonial powers to reimburse the French plantation owners for the loss of “their” land; the occupation by the US military from 1915 to 1934; the rise of the US backed dictator, “Papa Doc” Duvalier and an army that was used to suppress the people, along with the special police, the Ton Ton Macoutes; but he leveled much of his criticism at the “socialist” Brazilian president, Lula da Silva, whose soldiers, as part of the UN’s occupying force, have massacred Haitian civilians, and the president of Ecuador whose army is currently providing training for the “new” Haitian army to replace the one that Aristede had disbanded in 1994. He points out that despite the reversals, despite the behind the scenes domination by Washington of Haiti’s political system, the people of Haiti continue to resist and continue taking their protests to the streets.

Takes on the World: Jeff Blankfort:NewsOp:Haiti, German Elections, No. Korea, Iran, Segment 1

3 months 3 weeks ago
I begin by noting that while Haiti was largely bypassed by Hurricanes Irma and Maria, its problems from past disasters, the 2010 earthquake and Hurricane Matthew persist, complicated by political problems, UN created cholera, and exploitation by international donors like the Red Cross. Blaming the US overthrow of Iraq and Libyan governements and attempt to do the same in Syria, for the rise of the ultra-right, racist movements of Europe, I look at the latest, the success of the Alternative for Germany in that country's elections through the eyes of Der Speigel and then Ha'aretz. I note the growing movement to boycott the Star Spangled Banner and predict that Colin Kaepernick will be his generation's Rosa Parks even while he remains unemployed. I then cite Trump's threat to destroy North Korea before the UN and a critic of his comment in the Washington Post and follow that with the rejoinder of Pyongang's foreign minister that Trump's speech was a declaration of war and that the North can feel free to shoot down US bombers not over their air space. I also point out that the reason that the US has not shot down any of the No. Korean missiles yet is that it fears the humiliation that will follow if it misses which is likely. Then, I turn to Trump's moves towards ending the Iran deal and the possibility he will shift the responsibility of certifying the deal Oct. 15 to the Senate which, controlled by Israel, will vote to pull out. Trump's demands that Iran make further concessions will go nowhere. I conclude with quoting from Hassan Rouhani's speech to the UN which referred to Trump as a rogue actor and attacked his speech's warlike tones in an institution designed to keep the peace.

Donald Drumpf Theatre: Donald Drumpf Theatre Vol. 37, Segment 1

3 months 3 weeks ago
WARNING: President says "son-of-a-bitch." Donald Drumpf Theatre Vol. 37 Bend the Knee. This week, everyone is kneeling, or mad about kneeling. Weird. An original radio theatre show each week, with most sounds culled from the previous week, about a fictional, theatrical presidency. Contradictions tell the story, with songs, skits, and clips from political news shows and late-night comedy routines. The definition of "radio theatre" is stretched here, with an updated Dickie Goodman and/or Richard Foreman-meets-mashup style sometimes, and a more straightforward take other weeks. Currently, the network has ordered another 15 episodes, but there are threats of cancellation. Anyone who would like to contribute to the show, should contact info@wgxc.org.
