Radio Ecoshock Show: Anxiety and the Flight to Safe Living, Segment 1

3 meses 2 semanas ago
Margaret Klein Salamon is a clinical psychologist turned climate warrior. Five years ago Margaret claimed a climate emergency and called for mass mobilization. Now cities and countries all over the world have called for a climate emergency. She's written a book about how to overcome eco-anxiety. While all things Corona overwhelm our lives and the news, greenhouse gas emissions have not stopped, and climate change continues to drive more vicious events, including fire, floods, extreme storms, drought, and soon extreme heat in the N. Hemisphere. Forget what will happen by the year 2100 - new science shows large ocean systems will begin to die off during this decade, with land ecology collapsing a decade or two later. Dr. Alex Pigot joins from London to explain this major paper published in the journal Nature.

Building Bridges: COVID-19 presents enhanced danger for African-Americans, Segment 1

3 meses 2 semanas ago
Déjà Vu All Over Again: Warning! Warning! COVID-19 Presents Enhanced Danger for Nation’s African American Communities with Dr. Donald Moore, a full-time general medicine practitioner, distinguishing for his service to his community and to his profession and who teaches medical students from Weill Medical College of Cornell University, and nurse practitioner students from New York University and Hunter College Nursing Schools. He is a board member of the New York Metro chapter of Physicians for a National Health Program. He has been recognized for his humanitarian efforts in health care delivery by the New York State Senate and U.S. Congress. There is a proverbial elephant in the room regarding the potential devastating impact COVID-19 presents for African-Americans says Dr. Moore. There’s an old saying in some African-American communities that is often applied to the broad-stroke disparity of the nation’s economy: when white folks catch a cold, Black folks get pneumonia. Loosely translated, this clichéd quip means a downturn in the economy might pose hardships for some white Americans, but it’s deadly for those Black Americans who are already mired at the bottom of the economic ladder and politically marginalized. Now, too many in the Black & Brown communities lack the resources to effectively combat COVID-19, lacking access to paid sick leave or living without health coverage and are more likely to work in an industry that has been most affected by the pandemic, putting them in greater economic jeopardy or increasing their exposure to the virus. We are facing a global public health crisis, and as in all emergencies, the most marginalized are at increased risk. Communities of color are likely to suffer the brunt of the health and economic impacts of the coronavirus crisis and any legislative response must contain targeted relief.
