TUC Radio: The Authoritarian Absurdity of the U.S. Constitution ONE of TWO , Segment 2

1 semana 1 día ago
Paul Street is an independent radical-democratic policy researcher, teacher, journalist, historian, and author of seven books. In this talk, that he gave at the Open University of the Left in Chicago in March 2019, he offered arguments and proof that the US constitution is not the sacred document protecting the "Peoples Rights”, but on the contrary is authoritarian and anti-democratic by design. For the 18th Century slaveholders and merchants popular sovereignty was the ultimate nightmare and they embedded safety mechanisms into the constitution that remain in force today via the Senate, Supreme Court and Electoral College. Street details how U.S. politics and policy are badly distorted by the nation's exceptionally durable charter and how we might finally stop playing "Simon Says" with militant anti-democrats like Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, and John Jay. Paul Street has authored seven books to date, among them: Racial Oppression in the Global Metropolis: a Living Black Chicago History; The Empire’s New Clothes: Barack Obama in the Real World of Power; Crashing the Tea Party: Mass Media and the Campaign to Remake American Politics; and They Rule: The 1% v. Democracy… Paul Street’s essays and commentaries have appeared in a wide variety of media such as CounterPunch, Truthdig, Black Agenda Report, the Chicago Tribune, The New York Times, and CNN to name only a few.

Sea Change Radio: Georgina Gustin on the Farm Bureau, Segment 1

1 semana 1 día ago
You may or may not have heard of the Farm Bureau but it is one of the most powerful lobbying organizations in this country, representing over six million members. And what does the Farm Bureau advocate for? More than you might think. As this week’s guest on Sea Change Radio, Inside Climate News reporter Georgina Gustin, explains, the Farm Bureau has been pushing conservative policies for over four decades now. Gustin gives us a better understanding of what the Farm Bureau does, whom it represents, and the environmental threat that it poses. Then, we revisit our discussion with Zero Mass Water CEO Cody Friesen who explains his company’s unique technology that turns humidity in the air into drinking water, using solar energy.

The Alembic Files: Mystery History Theater - 7, Segment 1

1 semana 1 día ago
John Wilkes Booth, a Southern sympathizer and a war profiteer, signs on to abduct Lincoln for Southern, Northern and British business interests, not to revenge the imminent demise of the Confederate States of America. But principals in the wheeling and dealing are not content with Booth’s dramatic posturings and lack of results. They want Captain James William Boyd, a Confederate spy and capable guerilla, to take over the abduction plan. Did the Money Men unwittingly sign Lincoln’s death warrant? Or did a higher political power decide Lincoln had to be deposed, not for just a “fortnight” but permanently? The clock begins ticking louder and faster as the Ides of April near an unforgettable end.

This Week In Palestine: Reverend Mariama White Hammond's reportback ..., Segment 1

1 semana 2 días ago
Today we finish up our presentation of the reportback by Nancy and Hubert Murray and the Reverend Mariama White Hammond. Last week we featured Nancy and Hubert Murray's presentations. As promised, this week we feature White Hammond's presentation, followed by the very rich question and answer discussion. This was a particularly inciteful reportback because of the historical perspective offered by this particular delegation. Rev. White-Hammond is an advocate for ecological and social justice, youth engagement, and Spirit-filled organizing. As former director of Project HIP-HOP ("Highways Into the Past - History, Organizing and Power"), she used the arts as a tool to raise awareness for social issues from juvenile incarceration to funding for public transportation. She is very committed to engaging the faith community, and particularly the Black church on climate change and ecological justice issues. She presently serves as the pastor at the New Roots AME Church in Dorchester, MA. Before we end, here is an update on the continuing assault by the Israeli lobby on campus groups who stand in support of Palestinian liberation and in particular the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions campaign (BDS). Recently there have been provocations on 2 campuses, Swarthmore on the East coast, and Pitzer in the west. The outside pressure on groups at Swarthmore has been so intense that it fostered a letter of support, which we read, from prominent educators and activists across the country. At Pitzer, a Mondoweiss article, which we read, begins with this summary: "Pitzer College’s governing council took an historic vote to suspend a program of study at the University of Haifa because of Israel’s discriminatory policies. And just three hours later that resolution was vetoed, emphatically, by the college president." Stay tuned!
