On March 17, antiwar activists unveiled a new strategy to stop the Iraq war by supporting GI resistance, discouraging recruitment, and deterring the draft. Cut off the supply of troops, stop the war!

On March 17th, a series of demos outlined our new strategy against the war. First, DAWN delivered an ultimatum to Bush demanding he order the withdrawal of troops from Iraq within 48 hours.

After that, Military Familes Speak out, Veterans for Peace, and many other groups rallied at Lafayette park vowing to counsel GI's to resist the war in defiance of an unconstitutional US law, and after the White House refused to accept both the ultimatum and the statement of support for GI resistors, we marched to a recruiting center for the final protest.

The recruiting station was closed! In other words, just the fact that we were on our way was enough to SHUT DOWN MILITARY RECRUITING at 14th and L for the day. One person burned draft registration forms and others gave speeches about the horrors of the Iraq war.

Before leaving we festooned the recruiting center with ribbons representing the dead of the war as well as posters urging youth to reconsider any plans to sign up.

The overall strategy put into action yesterday is aimed at simultainously hobbling military recruiting(now the war's weakest link!) and supporting GI's who choose to refuse to serve in Iraq. The third prong of this strategy is deterring the Bush regime from trying to reinstate the draft.

If existing soldiers exercise their obligations under the Nuremburg Laws to refuse to serve in Iraq, new soldiers cannot be recruited faster than GI's leave, desert, or become casualties, and the draft is prevented the war will end in defeat and Bush will have no choice but to throw in the towel.
