Increasingly, the US government is using Grand Juries, to repress political activists and dissidents. There are currently grand juries ongoing in San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego, New Jersey and other cities, which are targetting activists organizing for animal rights, environmental justice, and against oppression. Katya Komisaruk is a criminal defense lawyer with the Just Cause Law Collective, in Oakland, California. She served five years in federal prison, following a protest against nuclear weapons in 1987. Upon release, Komisurak attended Harvard Law School, from which she graduated cum laude in 1993. Katya is the author of Beat the Heat: How to Handle Encounters with Law Enforcement. I spoke to her by phone on July 12.
