WUTK FM Radio Free Theater

In honor of the arrest this past week of Rusty "Rush" Limbaugh, we bring your the Lost Archive broadcast of the Rich Flemball Show, snatched from the ether in Knoxville, Tennessee. Coincidentally, all "alternative" news was censored from WUTK FM, just a few months prior to the Operation Northwoods-style "terror" attacks on 9/11/2001...

'Radio Free Theatre' brings back old days of entertainment

Daniel Brown
The Daily Beacon
University of Tennessee Knoxville
September 9, 1994

Think back to the days when the only electronic entertainment available came from a large, bulky box sitting by the fireplace in living room. At night, the whole family would sit around the radio listening to memorable broadcasts of radio programs, such as The Lone Ranger, President Roosevelt's addresses to the United States, or Orson Welles' unforgettable broadcast of War of the Worlds.

With the advent of television those days of radio drama have been almost forgotten, but some UT graduate student writers have resurrected this spirit with their radio show "Radio Free Theatre."

"It is a one hour program that features everything from comedy to horror to erotica," Lee Papa, PhD. candidate and producer of the program, said.

Since it first aired in January 1993, there have been memorable episodes featuring David Koresh and his Sex Kittens From Hell, the eerie Sea-Songs at Night, and the popular radio version of James Joyce's Ulysses set in Knoxville.

"It's different," Papa said. "There's nothing else like it on the radio in this area." Indeed it is "different" because radio drama allows listeners to do one thing that television "couch-potatoes" are unable to do: use their imagination.

To the radio listener, a fat, wart-covered man sitting by the microphone with a cigarette dangling from his mouth can be anything from a football "jock" to a handsome prince conveying emotions of happiness, sadness or desperation with just the sound of his voice.

"We want to expand people's notions of entertainment," Papa said.

One surprise is the amount of listenership "R.F.T." has received from older audiences in the Knoxville area. They have often been known to call the show and voice their opinions or make comments about different episodes that played. Of course, Papa has taken some calls from "ravers" anxious to hear Pogo and his "Techno-Difficulties" at 10 p.m. But for the most part, that does not disturb the routine of the show too badly.

Where does "Radio Free Theatre" come up with its ideas for a show each week? All material is original. Scripts are usually written by students, professors or people in the community. Once a script is chosen, then it is acted out by different students, most of whom are working on their Masters of Fine Arts degrees.

Much of their hard work has paid off with the result of such specialty shows like Derek Whittaker's House O'Fun put on by Derek Whittaker, who has a MFA in theater and The Rich Flemball Show, a spoof on The Rush Limbaugh Show produced by Mark Creter, a theater professor at Tennessee Technological University.

Papa says "R.F.T" is always looking for new ideas. If you have a radio script written or ideas for a show, send a letter with your ideas or a script to "Radio Free Theatre" P-103 Andy Holt Tower, Knoxville,TN 37996.

Training Students to Push Buttons

KNOXVILLE, TENN-- When we last heard from the student managers at WUTK, they said they were moving toward a rigidly formatted commercial approach because their main purpose is to train students for the commercial radio. With that excuse, they've been canning a number of so-called specialty shows from the air, including Knoxville Progressive Radio and "It's Just Knoxville." (Funny, we thought universities are supposed to encourage free thinking, not train students to be button pushers. Things sure have gone to hell since Emma's days in the halls of higher learning.)

Thing is, when the University of Tennessee applied for a license to broadcast at 90.3 FM back in 1978, it promised the Federal Communications Commission it would provide the community a range of "alternative" and educational news programming not heard elsewhere.

"A good many programs should accommodate both the letter and the spirit of these labels: education, information, instruction, news, and public affairs," the university wrote in its application. "Moreover, they should range beyond the local issues identified by community leaders and the general public in the University Community. Rather, they should address a number of topics which affect the physical and mental welfare of the station's audiences."

And if you look inside New Rock 90's Handbook, you'll find that the station considers itself a "noncommercial educational" station, as classified by the FCC. "The FCC set up this classification of stations to encourage "alternative" programming to serve the public and reach audiences who were not served by commercial radio stations in the market," the handbook reads.

So, it was with great consternation that the volunteers who put on Knoxville Progressive Radio from 9 a.m. to noon every Sunday on WUTK learned in May (without advance notice) that their show was canceled. They thought they were meeting the station's goals, ideals and raison d'?tre.

Knoxville Progressive Radio aired a variety of leftist news commentary. About 70 percent of the programming was syndicated national shows such as "Alternative" Radio (MIT Linguistics Professor Noam Chomsky was a popular favorite), RadioNation (the radio program of The Nation magazine) and Counterspin (the radio program of Fairness and Accuracy In Reporting (FAIR)). But there were also a number of local programs, including "Thoughts On Philosophy & the Environment" by UT professor John Nolt, a show produced by the Sincere Seven, a Knoxville worker-rights advocacy group, "Second Look," an interview show by Jacqueline Jones Ford, and tapes of local lectures. The programming was provided by Knoxville Progressive Radio (KPR) free of charge.

"It has been replaced by nothing," says Michael Kaplan, UT professor emeritus and a member of KPR. "They shuffle CDs on the air. They don't even have a human being in the studio."

Chad Harriss, operations manager of WUTK, wrote to KPR that the show was canceled for security reasons (even though KPR offered to provide the whole show on CD—in fact, they'd love to have their programs shuffled among the station's play list) and because the station wants to have only music programming. Harriss told Metro Pulse the main reason the show was canceled was because the group didn't apply for a show, as required.

Harriss also says that WUTK doesn't consider KPR a student group, since only three of its nine members are students. WUTK might air Radio Nation or Counterspin, but would rather deal with those groups directly, instead of working through a middle-man community organization, he says. The fear is that if they offer one community group a forum, they'd have to offer it to all of them.

"What would we have done if an ultra-right wing group had come and wanted to air their content?" Harriss says. "What argument could we make to other community groups that wanted to come in and air their views?"

But Kaplan says the station has promised to offer educational programming in its application for the station. He says KPR content cannot be found anywhere else on the radio, and much of it deals with issues important to African Americans, among others. "We consider this a free speech issue," Kaplan says. "I think it was politically, and perhaps even racially, motivated."

Harriss says WUTK does offer non-entertainment fare, including news, interviews and sports programming—just not during its 10 specialty shows. "We're just trying to manage the place is all we're trying to do," Harriss says.

Kaplan says KPR will appeal the decision, starting with the College of Communications and moving up to the Board of Trustees, the state Legislature and governor, if need be.

What infuriates Kaplan the most is the attitude of those who run WUTK. Barbara Moore, head of UT's broadcasting department, wrote in an email to KPR: "...your use of our airwaves was a privilege, not a right." The airwaves don't belong to WUTK, they're public domain, Kaplan points out. You'd think the head of the broadcasting department would know that. (Read about efforts to start a true community radio station in Knoxville in Citybeat, page 7.)

"UT is completely unaccountable," Kaplan says. "We can destroy every one of their arguments, but what good does it do if no one there is listening? The problem with UT is they never back down. They'll never admit they're wrong." [Most organized criminals don't...]

"It's important that those of us who love liberty, and resent Big-Brother government, to identify the philosophic supporters who have the most to say about the direction our country is going. This depends on whether the American people desire to live in a free society and reject the dangerous notion that we need a strong central government to take care of us from the cradle to the grave. Those who scheme are proud of the achievements in usurping control over foreign policy. These are the 'Neoconservatives' ["New Conservative" Jewish Communists] of recent fame. But can freedom and the republic survive this takeover? Here is a brief summary of the general understanding of what Neocons believe:
They agree with Trotsky on permanent revolution, violent as well as intellectual.
They accept the notion that the ends justify the means—that hardball politics is a moral necessity.
They believe lying is necessary for the state to survive.
They believe a powerful federal government is a benefit.
They believe pertinent facts about how a society should be run should be held by the elite and withheld from those who do not have the courage to deal with it.
Force should not be limited to the defense of our country.
Not only did Leo Strauss write favorably of Machiavelli, Michael Ledeen, a current leader of the neoconservative movement, did the same in 1999 in his book with the title, Machiavelli on Modern Leadership, and subtitled: Why Machiavelli's iron rules are as timely and important today as five centuries ago. Ledeen specifically praises: 'Creative destruction… both within our own society and abroad.' If those words don't scare you, nothing will."

"Last Tuesday, the Attending Physician of the United States Congress treated me for Gastroenteritis," a stomach illness. According to Kennedy, the attending physician prescribed Phenergan, an anti-nausea medication, which in addition to treating gastroenteritis, "I now know [it] can cause drowsiness and sedation." "Following the last series of votes Wednesday evening, I returned to my home on Capitol Hill and took the prescribed amount of Phenergan and Ambien [chemical lobotomy], which was also prescribed by the Attending Physician some time ago and I occasionally take to fall asleep. Some time around 2:45am, I drove the few blocks to the Capitol Complex believing I needed to vote."

Anterograde Amnesia.
A temporary form of anterograde amnesia is also induced by some medications. Benzodiazepines all have varying degrees of anterograde amnesic effects. This is utilised in the use of benzodiazepines such as temazepam and lorazepam as premedicatants. A more sinister, criminal abuse is in date rape (chemical submission). Also, unplanned effects of this drug effect are seen in cases of amnesia automatism induced by prescription drugs, often in association with moderate alcohol intake. Victims have memory gaps for a period shortly after taking the drug concerned, which causes embarrassment and fear for what might have happened. In some cases, victims realise they have changed planes during their memory gap or discover that they rented a car. Disinhibited and uncharacteristic behaviour (sometimes together with carrying out quite complex tasks - e.g. cooking and serving a nice meal, but in the nude) is sometimes witnessed during such episodes, which adds further embarrassment and distress.
