A Photography Exhibition by Local Students of the Capital Region

Albany, NY – On Monday October 30, from 6 – 8 PM, The Harriet Tubman High School at 103 Schuyler Street in Albany will host a free reception for the one-night photography exhibition entitled Not As Seen On T.V.: Katrina Destruction and Rebuilding Efforts. The photographs on display were taken by local students from the Albany Free School during a trip to New Orleans.

In May of 2006, nine students and two teachers from the Albany Free School traveled to New Orleans to work with the Common Ground Collective, a grassroots organization started in the days immediately following Hurricane Katrina. The students spent four days working in New Orleans’ flood-ravaged Ninth Ward, helping with projects ranging from gardening to food preparation and distribution. While there, three of the students and one of the teachers documented their experiences resulting in a compelling and eye-opening photographic essay. The images depict both the devastating destruction and the inspiring grassroots responses that continue to this day.

The photography exhibition, Not As Seen On T.V: Katrina Destruction and Rebuilding Efforts was sponsored by the Albany Free School, The Harriet Tubman High School, and unseenamerica NYS.
