Think of Adelaide in the not-too-distant future, when petrol is no longer available, when most of the population has died of disease or starvation, and those who are left have to scrape a living as best they can. Think music, circus, poetry and politics, and you’ll be thinking...
Pastiche
Pastiche, a satirical, cautionary tale set in a post-oil future, tells the story of a young man’s adventures in the gay street life of a barely recognisable Adelaide. Petrol is no longer available, most of the population has died of disease or starvation, and those who are left scrape a living as best they can.
Written by local playwright Mij Tanith (Blind circumstance, Illusions, Just Write), the story unfolds around a naïve country lad, Finn (Matt Gilbertson) who hits the city in an attempt to find friends and some means of making a living. In meeting up with Jenny, a ukulele-playing busker (Jacqy Phillips), and a troupe of feral circus performers, Finn learns some valuable lessons about living on his wits.
Despite its grim themes, Pastiche is very much a comedy, directed with a deft and experienced hand by David Jobling. His work with Darlinghurst Theatre, Sydney Theatre Company & Cirque de Soleil, in particular, is solid grounding in pulling together the many talents of Damien Ralphs (Kurruru Indigenous Youth Performing Arts), Dan Daw (Restless Dance Company), Terri Catt (Rambutan Circus) and Dave Thorburn (ZigZag Circus).
With its haunting music performed by Gilbertson, Phillips, Vicki Bennett (The Standard Deviations), and Aaron Davis (student at the Elder conservatorium), and a script that weaves together circus skills, politics and poetry, Pastiche offers a very different theatrical experience. Gilbertson (Berlin Cabaret, The Beat Goes On, Boho, Cabaret Cafe,) drops his German accent and hangs up his fishnets in an all new singing and dancing role. Phillips, well known for her work with State Theatre Company, Vital Statistix and a host of other productions, adds a wealth of talent and experience. Combine these with an all-singing, all-dancing troupe, and you’ve got an incandescent new show with broad appeal!
