Britain and the United States are thinking about easing the sanctions against Iraq. On Thursday, British and US officials are to meet to talk about changing the sanctions against Iraq, perhaps implimenting so called "smart sanctions." Smart sanctions would focus on arms control and let civilian goods into the country.

There have been people, with in Iraq and in the rest of the world, claiming the sanctions have killed more than an million Irqai civilians. ___ was at a protest in New York City on Monday against the sanctions and the recient bombings of Iraq. S/he spoke about the sanctions. [actuality]

Condemnation of the bombings is widespread around the world. In Mexico people are questioning the timing of the bombings. They feel the bombings upstaged the meeting between Mexican President Fox and US President Bush. A front page headline in the English-language Mexico City News asked "Why Now?" The political weekly Proceso said Mr. Fox was trying to show the world how modern Mexico is and the eyes of the media were turned to Iraq instead.

But there was some support for the bombings. The Polish and Canadian governments expressed support for the air raids. Because of this Iraq cut trade links to those two countries.
