On Thursday, British and US officials are to meet to discuss the current economic sanctions against Iraq which have been in effect since the gulf war.

While the current sanctions are a blanket approach, there has been movement , toward implimenting so called "smart sanctions." Smart sanctions would focus on arms control and let civilian goods into the country.

Critics around the world are claim that the economic sanctions are responsible for the deaths of more than one million iraqi civilians.

Chicago based Voices in the Wilderness decried the attacks in a statement Friday, but they also noted that this isn't new. Since December 1998 317 Iraqis were killed in US/UK bombings and 936 were injured.

Mexico is questioning the timing of the bombings coinciding with the meeting between Mexican President Fox and US President Bush. A front page headline in the English-language Mexico City News asked "Why Now?" The political weekly Proceso said Mr. Fox was trying to show the world how modern Mexico is and the eyes of the media were turned to Iraq instead.
