On Thursday, British and US officials are to meet to discuss the current economic sanctions against Iraq which have been in effect since the gulf war.

Current economic sanctions are a blanket approach, and critics claim that the sanctions are responsible for the deaths of more than one million iraqi civilians.

There is a movement toward implementing so called "smart sanctions," which would focus on arms control and allow civilian goods into the country.

People around the world are condemning the recent bombings. Since December 1998, 317 Iraqis were killed in US/UK bombings and 936 were injured.

___ was at a protest in New York City on Monday which was organized against both the sanctions and the intensified bombings of Iraq.

[actuality]

Mexico is questioning the timing of the bombings coinciding with the meeting between Mexican President Fox and US President Bush. Iraq cut trade relations with Polish and Canadian governments because of their support for the air raids
