Michael Phillips, 24, received his bachelor's degree in international affairs from George Washington University in 2005. In June of 2006 he moved to Nablus to volunteer with Project Hope teaching English to children and university students in Nablus and the nearby Balata and Askar Refugee Camps. He also volunteered with the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) in a school in Askar Refugee Camp, where he organized after-school activities for students in grades 6-9. Phillips also provided English-language classes for local humanitarian volunteers at Palestine Red Crescent Society regional headquarters in Nablus. On October 10th, Phillips was taken hostage by two armed men in Nablus and held for 28 hours. He was released unharmed and remains committed to working for justice in Palestine.
