Starbucks has become one of the nations largest dairy purchasers. In recognition of that fact, protestors from Food and Water Watch asked Starbucks to "Mooove off the hormones," in particular Monsanto's notorious rBGH(Posilac).
There were six adults dressed as cows(complete with udders) and two small children sdreeed as calves backed up by an equal number of protestors not in costume. For about half an hour the group protested at the Starbucks at 7th st and Indiana Ave, educating customers and asking Starbucks to "hold the hormones."
If you agree, CALL STARUCKS at 1-800-235-2883 to demand that Starbucks buy milk only from cows not treated with artificial hormones. If you call today(Dec 5), expect to sit a while on hold to get through.
Posilac has caused an increase in udder infections known as mastitis in cows(this bleeds PUS into milk!) as well as heavy antibiotic use to fight the infections.
In addition, use of rBST has been shown to increase production of Insulin Growth Factor, a hormone shown to cause cancer in humans. Banned in Canada, the European Union, and many other nations, Posilac is used in about 1/3 of all US dairy herds.
BTW, the "Road to Seattle" began with exactly this kind of protest, as people disgusted with megacorporate behavior began striking at animal abuse, environmental devastation, and exploitative trade practices in the wake of NAFTA and the approval of genetically modified foods.
Monsanto's rBST was one of the very first products made with genetic engeneering(in bacteria) to get to market, at about the same time as the notorious L-tryptophan dietary suplement. L-Tryptophan, as you may remmeber, was also made with GMO bacteria and was recalled after causing several cases of paralysis.
