NAFTA
Testimony continues today in Vanouver, B.C. in
the NAFTA court hearing Mexico vs. Metaclad. This
hearing could determine the outcome of a case by the
California-based Sun Belt Water Corporation. On Monday they
asked for a dismissal of the Metaclad case. It was denied. Sun
Belt is suing the Canadian government under NAFTA for $100-220
million in costs and lost profits due to Canada's water movement restrictions.
Next, Vancouver Independent Media reporter,
Scott Nelson, requested to videotape the hearings. It was only opposed by Metalclad--they argued that the
public might get the misleading impression that they pollute--the
very issue at stake. Nelson's request garnered
much media attention, and thanks, by securing full media access.
Mexico's presentation started with the
background details of their Municipal legal battle.
