On Wednesday, April 28, the Brown Berets and groups statewide honored the 100th day since the tragic deaths of Durrell Feaster, 18, and Deon Whitfield, 17. On January 19, authorities found Durrell and Deon hanged in the cell they shared in the California Youth Authority's Stockton facility.
To commemorate this solemn day, Books Not Bars organized candlelight vigils "Stop the Tragedies, Stop the Abuse," a statewide candlelight vigil in honor of Durrell, Deon and every young person whose life has been stolen or broken by CYA.
The Watsonville autonomous chapter of the Brown Berets were at the town plaza holding signs and asking drivers to honk in support. Speakers spoke, including local students and Monet, an activist with Books Not Bars.
Augusto Cesar Sandino Segundo, from Free Radio Santa Cruz 101.1FM recorded the haps and mixed it up with a little music and poetry.
