Tapkara massacre:

Human rights observers in India's Jharkand state report Monday that local police opened fire February 2nd on an assembly of several thousand indigenous people opposed to the Koel-Karo dam project in the village of Tapkara. At least 9 people were killed and over 22 injured.

A local indigenous rights group accused the police of working on behalf of the government-controlled National Hydroelectric Power Corporation or NHPC, attempting to undermine popular organized opposition to its Koel-Karo project - a planned series of dams which would submerge 115 villages and displace over 7000 largely poor families in the area.

PRONUNCIATON TIPS:

Jharkand= "jar-CONNED"

Koel-Karo= "ko-el KUH-ro"

Tapkara= "TOP-kuh-ruh"

% of people evicted in India belonging to indigenous adivasi communities: 40
