Tuhbenahneequay spent much time instructing her children on how they must behave. She never struck them, patiently teaching them, that they must exercise self-control and never become upset or lose their tempers. When frightened they must keep still, for the enemy could learn their location from just one cry. Like all Ojibwa parents, Tuhbenahneequay gave her children great freedom to romp, to investigate things, to ask for whatever they wanted. Punishment hardly ever occurred. Hardihood, self-reliance, and an absence of fear were cultivated.
