On Monday Israeli Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom said during a meeting with the Palestinian Interior minister that the Israeli government would reconsider the implementation of the disengagement plan if Hamas won the legislative elections on July 17.
Saleh Al Na’ami a political analyst from Gaza questioned the Israeli government seriousness in implementing the disengagement plan
"Statements by Israeli Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom and decision by Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon to delay the disengagement plan raise lots questions on the Israeli governments seriousness in implementing the disengagement plan."
The Israeli Foreign minister criticized the Palestinian Authority plan to integrate Hamas into the Palestinian political system, charging that armed groups have no place in democratic societies.
Palestinian Interior Minster NaserYousif responded that the participation of Hamas in elections was a necessity and a remarkable achievement. The Palestinian Authority was working on creating a weapon-free society, except of those held by security forces, Yousif added reminding Shalom that elections are taking place on the bases of both the Oslo agreement and the road map peace plan.
