The United States' first lady, Laura Bush arrived in the country as part of a six-day Middle East trip meant to promote women's issues and help defuse anti-American sentiment in the region.

Despite the discomfort of the Palestinian officials, Mrs. Bush, who is the nation’s new goodwill ambassador, visited the Aqsa Mosque and the Dome of the Rock in the old city of Jerusalem. PA officials say this visit symbolizes the U.S. recognition of the Israeli sovereignty over this site, which is still a matter of dispute between the Palestinians and the Israelis.

Dr. Hanan Ashrawi, one of the prominent female law makers, said the visit was significant.

In comparison to other countries in the region and despite all of the difficulties Palestinian women succeeded in the past few years in achieving many rights in various fields.
