The following is a summary of the first broadcast of the Free Press News, a radio program launched tihs summer with the aim to offer over the airwaves independent coverage and analysis of Mexico's most important news and events.

MEXICO CITY: On June 7th, the first program of the Free Press News was launched in the studios of the pirate radio station KeHuelga at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM).

The top story, reported by Sprehuel, was about the continuing struggle of the Zapatistas and their current battle against the "counter-reform" that is currently under consideration by Mexico's respective state legislatures (the latest count has 9 states in favor, and 2 against - a majority of Mexico's 33 legislatures must pass the law for it to be put into effect).

The second story of the program, reported by Tania, highlights a report by Amnesty International on the damaging effects of corporate globalization on ordinary people all across the world.

Heading up the third story of the program, Camillo reports about suggestions from the World Bank for Mexico to cut nearly all its labor laws, suggestions that President Vicente Fox supports (even though the head of a major business association said such proposals were "extreme" and "went too far").

Our fourth story was a report by Antonio and Tania about the ongoing struggle in the Southern Mexico state of Qaxaca, where a major student strike is currently taking place. Finally, our last report by Tania and Sprehuel is a local update about the current state of affairs at UNAM.
