This morning, during an action in the Plaza de la Constitution, a group of Mexican activists extended the
Red Alert called by the EZLN on the entire country of Mexico. The group, which calls itself Direct Action Laboratory (DAL), came to the main plaza of Mexico City Thursday morning to paint a red star of the Zapatista flag over the main plaza of the Zocalo.

Durante una acción en la Plaza de la Constitución esta mañana, un grupo de activistas mexicanos llamó a la alerta roja del Ejercito Zapatista de Liberación Nacional una alerta roja para todo el país de México. El grupo, llamado Laboratorio de Acción Directa, llegó al zocalo nacional en la mañana del jueves para pintar una estrella roja de la bandera Zapatista sobre la plancha del Zócalo.
LAD dijo en su comunicado a la prensa, "Entendemos que la Alerta Roja del EZLN no es exclusiva en Chiapas, sino que refleja la situación nacional. Es evidente el estado de sitio en que el gobierno federal (avalado por los gobiernos locales) ha sumido al país, con el argumento de combatir la inseguridad que ellos mismo han creado."
Quince dirigentes de LAD convergieron en el Zócalo antes del amanecer con escobas y baldes de pintura. Dibujaron las lineas de la estrella con tiza cuando llego un policia. Luego, una patrulla vino. La acción, se le explicó al policía, era una expresión de arte hecha por estudiantes. Con el sol subiendo, los dirigentes del LAD empezaron a correr, echando pintura roja por las lineas de la estrella y difundiendolas con las escobas. Cumplieron la mitad cuando tres dirigentes fueron detenidos.
La actividad paro un rato mientras empezaron las negociaciones para la libertad de los detenidos. Iban a pintar la estrella roja y también, "Ni Narcos, Ni Muertos y Ni Callados" por diferentes lados de la plaza. "Lamentablemente, fue detenida la acción por el policía," dijo Carmen de LAD.
Un dirigente de LAD, Refugio, fue lastimado cuando una llanta de la patrulla pasó por encima de su pie. "Este acto que estamos haciendo es un acto político. La constitución mexicana les guarda este derecho de manifestar libremente," dijo él.
"Creo que una parte de la acción ya se cumplió con la agresión del gobierno democrático del distrito federal. Entonces, es un gobierno supuestamente de la izquierda que no permite la libertad de expresión."
Eventualmente LAD cumplió la estrella sin llenarla con pintura. No se pudo terminar el trabajo por intervencion policial, pero el cometido principal se cumplió. Los tres detenidos fueron liberados un par de horas después.
Abigail de LAD explicó más de, por qué hay una alerta roja nacional. "En Ciudad Juárez hay casi 400 muertas, en toda la frontera ha habido 70 ejecuciones por narcos, por ajuste de cuentas, arreglos políticos...en la frontera del sur estamos viendo el aumento del ejército. Lo que esta haciendo el gobierno es meter más policía sin avisar. La situación es cada vez peor.
"La alerta roja debe ser nacional por que estamos viviendo esta militarización impresionante y ademas estamos viviendo una violencia muy fuerte que está en general organizada y mantenida por el gobierno," dijo Abigail.
"El EZLN ha propuesto a nuestra sociedad muchas cosas y debemos responder en nuestra propias formas. El Zócalo es el espacio de convergencia de la población nacional. Por eso, el EZLN hizo aqui la última parada en la caravana zapatista. El Zócalo es un lugar donde tenemos el derecho de opinar. Esto es federal, el Zócalo es de la nación y nosotros somos la nación."

This morning, during an action in the Plaza de la Constitution, a group of Mexican activists extended the
Red Alert called by the EZLN on the entire country of Mexico. The group, which calls itself Direct Action
Laboratory (DAL), came to the main plaza of Mexico City Thursday morning to paint a red star of the Zapatista
flag over the main plaza of the Zocalo.
DAL issued the following statement to the press: "We understand that the Red Alert issued by the EZLN
is not exclusive to Chiapas, but that it reflects the situation nationwide. It is obvious that the government is
using the argument of fighting the insecurity that they themselves have created to impose martial law, this is
supported by the local governments, and that it has risen throughout the country."
15 leaders of the DAL converged at the Zocalo before sunrise with brooms and buckets of paint. They
had a chalk outline of the star drawn by the time the first police officer arrived. Soon after the patrol
arrived. Members explained to the police that the action was a student art project. As the sun rose,
members of the DAL began to run, pouring red paint along the outline of the star, using the brooms to
spread the paint and fill it in. They were able to finish the outline of half the star before three members
were arrested.
Activity was halted while members negociated for the release of those arrested. They had planned to
paint the entire star red and write the words "Nor Narcos, Nor Death, Nor Silence" on different sides of
the plaza. "Unfortunately, the action has been stopped by the police," said Carmen of the DAL.
A leader of the DAL, Refugio, was injured when a police patrol car rolled over his foot. "This act that we
are doing is a political one. The mexican constitution guarantees the right to demonstrate freely," he said.
"I believe that part of today's action was vindicated through the agression of this democratic government.
In that it is a supposedly leftist government that does not allow the freedom of expression."
Eventually, the DAL completed the entire outline of the star without filling it in. The work could not be
completed because of police intervention, but the overall object was accomplished. The three arrested
were released a few hours later.
Abigail, of DAL, explains further of why there this is a national red alert. "In the city of Juarez, there have
been almost 400 deaths, along the entire border there have been 70 narco executions, to settle debts, for
political deals... along the southern border we are seeing a rise in the military forces. The government is
adding more police without warning. The situation is getting worse."
"The red alert should be a national one because we are witnessing this rise in militarization as well as living
in this level of extreme violence that is for the most part organized and supported by the government,"says
Abigail.
"The EZLN has proposed many things to our society and we should respond in our own way. The Zocalo
is a convergence space of the national public. It is because of this, that the EZLN chose to have this as the
last stop for the Zapatista caravan. The Zocalo is a place where we have the right to our opinions. This is
federal land, the Zocalo belongs to the nation and we are that nation."
