Israel and the Palestinian Authority have reached an agreement on the creation of an overland connection between Gaza and the West Bank following the disengagement.
The passage will be a continuous railroad escorted by the Israeli military that would link the Erez industrial zone in the northern part of the Gaza Strip with Tarqoumia, near Hebron, in the southern West Bank.
The overland link has been a bone of contention throughout the Israeli-Palestinian talks on the disengagement. For months, the Palestinians focused in their talks on the Gaza Strip border crossing including a safe passage to link the Strip with the West Bank.
A safe passage was promised to them under the Oslo Accord but never implemented.
Israel has also threatened to delay the withdrawal if Hamas wins the PA Parliamentary elections. Recently, Hamas rejected an invitation from the PA to join the current cabinet in a unity government after the Israel pulls out of the Gaza Strip.
