Enviornmental Health and Justice
March 18th: Currents of Resistance delved into the topic of environmental
health and justice. We heard from Reverend Richard Bright, Associate
Director of the Morehouse School of Medicine‚s Prevention Research Center,
about his pilot study on ground-level ozone pollution in the metro-Atlanta
area. A distinguishing feature of Reverend Bright‚s study was its focus on
citizen participation in the monitoring of environmental pollution levels in
communities. The study showed that ozone concentrations are directly
proportional to traffic levels and that communities with more green space
have lower ozone levels. The study suggests an opportunity to integrate
urban planning and public health needs. We were also joined by Yomi Noibi,
Director of Training for Environmental Community Action, also known as
Eco-Action. Yomi discussed upcoming training that is available to help
develop a grassroots, statewide network of citizens and community groups to
promote sound environmental problems. Yomi also talked about the Need to
Know Campaign and the Stop Cancer Where it Starts Campaign that examines
cancer-causing chemicals from environmental pollution.
