Professor Ignacio Chapela, microbial ecologist and mycologist at the University of California, Berkeley, and one of the scientists whose story is told in "Scientists Under Attack," a film by Bertram Verhaag, tells how in 2001, he was the target of a campaign financed by Monsanto for a paper he published in Nature on the effects of genetically-modified corn (maize) on the native species grown in southern Mexico. The campaign actually led to the unprecedented action of the paper being withdrawn by Nature, and further attacks on Dr. Chapela.
