We invite everyone who is interested in radio activism and will participate between June 16-22, in Thessaloniki, to come in contact with the radio collective.

{This mail will be also sent in Greek, French, German and Spanish to Indymedia Centers and other alternative media collectives}

1431AM is an independent radio collective, whose aim is providing free speech and alternative information. The need for such a different voice was the reason for its birth; two years ago, during the students’ strike, the radio station tried to confront with the fact that the conventional media obscured the situation. Today, in view of the EU Summit in our city, we feel the responsibility to defend the immediate news flow, through our structure and our operation.

The character of the station is defined by its weekly members’ meeting , via direct-democratic, non-hierarchical procedures. Everyone can participate, as long as they respect the structure of the collective. It is financially self-sufficient, and independent of political interests that political groups or parties may have. During the last two years, it has maintained a multiform image, which bears no relation to commercial or profiteering motives.

Recognising the value of the alternative information during this era of globalisation, we consider that our radio station can play an important role during the summit, from the streets, to the movements and the events that will take place. In this effort of ours, it would be useful for us to co-operate with other groups that act for alternative information in the way we do.

So, we invite everyone who is interested in radio activism and will participate between June 16-22, in Thessaloniki, to come in contact with the radio collective. The radio station is based in the University Campus, at the centre of Thessaloniki, not far from the site of the protests, and can be heard in many areas of Northern Greece. There is a phone-line and a website with live netcasting. We expect your response as soon as possible, in order to be better organised.
