Thousands of Palestinians participated in rallies and marches today in cities, villages and refugee camps throughout the West Bank and the Gaza Strip to commemorate the one year anniversary of Yasser Arafat's death.
Residents of the village of Bil'in, west of Ramallah, together with Israeli and international peace activists decided to dedicate this week's anti-wall protest to the former Palestinian leader. Today they protested at the Separation Wall wearing masks bearing the likenesses of Arafat, Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King, and Nelson Mandela. Clashes erupted between the Israeli soldiers and the protesters during today's demonstration 15 were injured and one Palestinian boy was shot by a rubber bullet in the head.
Meanwhile, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas led an official ceremony at the Ramallah compound where Arafat spent his last two years surrounded by the Israeli troops.
Palestinians continue to question the cause of Arafat's mysterious death as an autopsy was never performed at the request of Arafat's wife.
