The arrests:

There were 29 people arrested: 2 Spanish, 2 Austrian, 1 English, 1 American, 1
Syrian; the rest of them Greek.

Two of them were minors and were released, as they were charged with delinquency.
Another 20 people were released after they payed 1500€ or ACCEPTED restrictive terms. One of them (the American one) was later detained again, so as to be deported.

The charges:

27 people were charged with criminal actions. According to the law, the charges are impeached by the public prosecutor, after studying the legal papers written by the police.

They are accused for:
“Construction, possession and use of explosive material repeatedly, notable attitude against the autorities, resistance against the authorities, notable disturbance of the common peace, notable continuous damage of another’s property, continuous arson with human lives being endangered, illegal possesion and use of weapons.”

There is an incident that annoyed the lawyers: On Sunday 22nd of July, at ten o’clock in the evening, the public prosecutor announced orally that only 7 of them were charged with climinal actions, and 20 with deliquency actions. Though, according to the document published at the early hours (of Monday 23/06), all 27 were charged with criminal actions. Thus, the legal team was prevented from preparing the pleadings the way they should have.

About the 8 being detained

According to the law, they must have a trial in a 18 months’ time. Two people are kept in Avlona prisons of Central Greece, 5 people are kept in Diavata of Thessaloniki and one of them in the Transport Department of Thessaloniki.

English citizent: There is a video document, proving that his charges were set up. It is obvious that the police forced him to carry another’s bag, that contained a hammer, a molotov coctail and an axe. The video is about to be used by the legal team during the defend process.

Syrian citizent: At this point, there is not any possibilty of him being deported, a fact that would be worrying, due to the strict law of Syria.

Spanish citizents: According to a report of the greek public TV channels (ET3, NET), and a nationwide newspaper article (Eleftherotypia), one of them was presented as a Basque autonomist, reported as an internationally wanted by the Europol. Though, none of them was a Basque, and as soon as the lying of media is proved, everyone responsible will face legal actions.

American citizent: He is now in terms of executive deportation. He was released with a recognizance. He went to collect his belongings from the police department and he was told that he will be deported. Therefore he is detained in the Tarsport Department. There are going to be legal actions against the deportation by the legal team.

How the arrested were treated.

A basic problem is that although they were obviously beaten, they were not brought before the medical coroner, despite the official requests of the legal team (with the exception of the 2 Austrian guys that were seen by a medical coroner for a while).

The following have also been reported: The Syrian was maltreated with no reason. Another guy’s part of hair was cut and his arm was obviously hit. Finally, a greek guy had to be transferred to the hospital but they refused to let him stay in, for a few days, although it was asked by the doctors who examined him.

It must be mentioned that it was arranged for all prisoners to be seen by their presonal doctor, but they were finally examined by a simple police doctor (whose id is known) who offered just basic treatment.

Legal actions were made by the legal team, about the maltreatment and doctors’ issue, which are about to be declined as usually. Therefore, repeated requests towards the prisoners’ release are about to follow.

How they

It is also requested that all 5 prisoners in Thessaloniki jail, are kept in the same place, so as to help each other and have a more human environment. There was an additional representation by the Spanish Consulate for this.

There was also a problem on posting things. Some basics are allowed to be transferred in the prison only by the relatives, neither by the lawyers nor by mail, contrary to what was previously announced. Thus, there are efforts so as the problem can be solved, especially for those whose relatives are abroad.
