Housing Minister Isaac Herzog, a member of the labor party, has approved 350 new housing units for Maaleeh Adoumim. Herzog said he made the decision in consultation with Amir Peretz, the newly-elected leader of his party. The expansion is seen as a move to attract more right-wing Israeli voters to the Labor Party in elections scheduled for March.

Notably, both the newly elected leader of the Labor Party, and the outgoing Israeli Prime Minister, Sharon, share the goal of expanding settlement blocs in the West Bank. That's a violation of both international law, and the U.S.-backed roadmap for peace.
