Makoma Lekalakala of Jubilee South Africa discusses NEPAD and South African imperialism in Africa
The New Partnership for Africa’s Development, or NEPAD, may read like a pan-africanist plan for eradicating poverty in Africa. But underneath the rhetoric, NEPAD is a neoliberal proposal for promoting privatization, foreign direct investment and the expatriation of resources in African countries. At the Polycentric World Social Forum in Bamako, Mali, Makoma Lekalakala explains how South Africa’s role in promoting NEPAD illustrates its expanding role as a sub-imperialist power on the continent.
