Republican and Democratic Lawmakers Apologize to Man Twice Wrongly Convicted
STATE CAPITOL, PHOENIX – Republican and Democratic lawmakers gathered at the Arizona Capitol today to apologize to Ray Krone for his suffering during the more than 10 years he was imprisoned for a 1991 murder he did not commit.
Krone was present at the Arizona Capitol Monday as a guest of the Coalition of Arizonans to Abolish the Death Penalty.
Krone was twice wrongfully convicted of the 1991 murder of a Phoenix woman. Krone spent more than a decade in prison. For two of those years, Krone sat on death row. DNA evidence in 2002 proved that Krone was innocent of killing Kim Ancona.
“We need to carefully study the Ray Krone case to ensure justice for victims and those accused,” said Sen. Huppenthal, who is the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee.
“Ray Krone has lost more than a decade of his life because our justice system is flawed. When one man sits on death row for a crime he didn't commit, we have irrefutable evidence that our justice system needs improvement," said Rep. Lopes, leader of the Democrats in the House. "Today I apologize to Ray Krone for the state of Arizona letting him down. My words cannot undo his suffering but hopefully they can help him more forward."
