Anmesty International is holding a conference this week in central Mexico. Among the issues discussed is the report released last week in which the human rights organization condemned the lack of political will in Mexico to pursue the cases of hundreds of missing and murdered women in the bordertown and Cuidad Juarez.
According to La Jornada, more than 500 delegates from over 80 countries are present at the meeting. Amnesty International investigator Irene Khan has vowed to make the cased of the women of Juarez an international priority.
On the grassroots level, Amigos de las Mujeres en Juarez is calling for a demonstration in Chihuahua, the capital of the state in which Juarez is located. In solidarity, the Amigos de Las Mujeres en Houston will hold a demonstration
outside of the Mexican consulate tommorrow from 11 to noon.
In a letter made public this week, 31 U.S. congressional representatives called on Mexican president Vicente Fox to order an earnest investigation into the crimes. A Congressional delegation will travel to Ciudad Juarez in October on a fact finding mission.
