This Week In Palestine: Ian Williams on How the U.S. Shields Israel From U.N. Accountability, Segment 1

3 días 7 horas ago
Phil Weiss of Mondoweiss has written a troubling article documenting the power of the Jewish community in using its funding to control members of congress concerning their votes on of the flow of money to support Israel. Recent events give illustration to this phenomenon. We quote from that article. Next, our feature presentation this week is a speech by journalist Ian Williams, delivered at a forum sponsored by the Washington Report on Middle East Affairs. It picks up on our examination of the influence of the Israeli lobby on global politics.

Sea Change Radio: Shamus Roller on Housing Justice, Segment 1

3 días 11 horas ago
For the past year and a half, we've been watching the numbers: Covid cases, ER beds, deaths, and, more recently, immunization rates. There's another set of numbers, however, that has gotten less attention but is just as connected to this pandemic as any of these other figures: housing. The pandemic has been a huge test for our nation's ability to house its residents, and so far we are failing miserably - experts estimate that 40 million Americans are vulnerable to losing their housing. The federal moratorium on evictions was lifted by the Supreme Court in September, and the vast majority of states have no protections in place to help people hold on to their homes. This week on Sea Change Radio, we speak with Shamus Roller, the Executive Director of the National Housing Law Project, about housing challenges, evictions, and homelessness. We also discuss potential solutions to advance housing justice.

TUC Radio: Fire and Forest Ecology in the American West - Chad Hanson and Monica Bond, Segment 2

3 días 11 horas ago
On June 5, 2021, the wildlife biologist Dr. Monica Bond and fire ecologist Dr. Chad Hanson were speaking with an international audience at a webinar hosted by the Wild Earth Guardians. In a year of catastrophic fires, not just in the US, they discussed what to do - and maybe even more importantly what not to do - for these burned ecosystems to recover. Monica Bond,Ph.D., is a wildlife biologist and biodiversity advocate with The Wild Nature Institute. They conduct scientific research on endangered wildlife. Chad Hanson is cofounder of the John Muir Project of Earth Island Institute. His Ph.D. is in ecology with a research focus on fire ecology. His most recent book is: Smokescreen - Debunking Wildfire Myths to Save Our Forests and Our Climate. Hanson and Bond spoke to the WildEarth Guardians in June, 2021. With offices in seven (Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, Oregon, Washington)) western states the WildEarth Guardians are restoring wild places and rivers. Three months after this conversation, in September 2021, the John Muir Project and the Center of Sustainable Economy published a footnoted study with an urgent warning, they said: “Logging Provisions in Infrastructure & Budget Reconciliation Packages would worsen the Climate Crisis” Both the Infrastructure Bill and Budget Reconciliation contain over $2 billion in subsidies for logging coupled with a mandate to log 10 million acres over the next six years with another 20 million acres to follow, and the promotion of logging in naturally recovering fire areas. This at a time where we urgently need to protect forests to help sequester carbon emissions.
