This Week In Palestine: Tariq Kenney-Shawa on the shift in the way that the Palestinian narrative is discussed in the media, on campuses, and on the streets, Segment 1

1 mes 2 semanas ago
There's a shift within the last few years in the way that the Palestinian narrative is discussed in the media, on campuses, and on the streets of America. It is not dramatic, and has not yet affected Washington politics, but it is evolving. Today on This Week In Palestine, we take a deep dive into the dynamic with Tariq Kenney-Shawa who has studied the dynamic of this shift and discusses it on the Occupied Podcast recorded September 22nd, 2021 with Lara Friedman and Khaled Elgindy.

Taylor Report: Worker Voices and Collective Bargaining Processes Need to be Respected, Segment 1

1 mes 2 semanas ago
Since the beginning of the pandemic, the capitalist command system we live under has dictated responses or non-responses to COVID without consulting the organized labour force. Nurses and other health workers fought disease in appalling conditions, at great risk. They were told they were heroes, but would not receive substantial pay increases, or even a greater voice. Today, employers are rolling out vaccine mandates for workplaces. Some union leaderships, such as UNIFOR, have taken the position that employer dictates must be respected above all else. However, the top-down tactic of bullying and shaming employees into taking a vaccine will just frustrate things. Workers have been on the frontline of the pandemic, as nurses and other medical roles, and performing the labour needed to keep society going. Unions are ready to implement public health measures. For those who refuse vaccines, there are workplace processes in place where people can put forward their case. We should respect the mechanisms that exist, and give a fair hearing to anyone who wants it. Overall, organized labour needs to become a voice in public health, and its role expanded.

1 mes 2 semanas ago
Sonic Café, Steely Dan there, from the 1973 Countdown to Ecstasy album. So welcome, time to forget all those things you’re worried about and join us here for episode 259. I’m your host Scott Clark and this time the Sonic Café presents the Jack in the Beanstalk: the sequel. Yes, just like any blockbuster, Hollywood makes a follow-up to keep ringing that cash register baby… so we thought we’d do the same with this Fractured Fairytale narrated by Edward Everett Norton. Our sequel picks up a generation later and tells us how the Giant’s son gets the goose back. Yay bet you didn’t see that one coming? Our story is supported by a music mix plucked from 45 years featuring tunes about gold and clouds and guns from Tonic, The Bamboos, David Sylvian, Aerosmith, Panic at the Disco and of course many more. All that plus a bang up Sonic Café welcome to our newest sponsor. Listen for a word from Guns. Yes guns. Wherever life takes you, there will be Guns. Guns, they’re here to stay! All that and more as we present Jack and the Beanstalk: the sequel, here from that little café that brings you intelligent, eclectic, irreverent radio that’s fun! Here’s Todd Rundgren. We’re the Sonic Café.
