TUC Radio - Today is day 585 of genocide. Prof. Noura Erakat's Urgent Plea at the United Nations

A-Infos Radio Project
1 month 1 week ago
The United Nations are commemorating the violent expulsion of 750,000 Palestinians from their homes and land in 1948 to make room for the state of Israel. Noura Erakat is a Palestinian human rights lawyer and Rutgers University professor. In her address she focused on the ongoing campaign of genocide against the Palestinian people in Gaza. As trained lawyer Erakat confronts the narrative that frames this as, quote, War. This is not a legal controversy, she says, there is no question that this is genocide; it is a political controversy. And she urged the nations who filled the auditorium to break their silence. Before presenting her remarks at the United Nations, here is a clip from a recent interview on Democracy Now, where Noura Erakat is a frequent guest. Amy Goodman asked her about her diagnosis that the U.S. backed war on Palestine is expanding authoritarianism at home, right here - inside the U.S. with a boomerang effect. You can find the video of Noura Erakat’s address at the United Nations on YouTube under the title: Today is day 585 of genocide. Sea Change Radio - Gustav Peebles: Not Just Banking, Carbon Banking

A-Infos Radio Project
1 month 1 week ago
Have you ever thought about how random it seems that gold is worth, well, its weight in gold? This week’s guest on Sea Change Radio, Gustav Peebles, is an anthropologist and monetary policy expert at Stockholm University. He has not only wondered about the way human beings assign value to a particular element on the periodic table, he has pondered what it would look like if we we applied precious valuation to an element that really matters for our own survival, like atmospheric carbon. In his new book, co-written with Benjamin Luzzatto, “The First and Last Bank: Climate Change, Currency, and a New Carbon Commons,” Peebles lays out a novel, scalable way not to just dole out carbon credits, but to actually monetize the conservation of carbon waste. We discuss the fundamentals of a possible carbon banking system, and talk through just how such a concept might roll out.

WINGS: Women's International News Gathering Service - WINGS #08-25 Nalini Malani: Transgressions (for Week of June 2)

A-Infos Radio Project
1 month 1 week ago
Nalini Malani came to India as a child refugee during the 1947 partition of India and Pakistan, an experience that deeply informs her work. She works with paint, video, and "shadow plays" on mylar cylinders, uses figures from mythology, audio of disappearing languages, and voices and experiences of the oppressed and dispossessed, especially workers, the lower castes, and women. The Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam has acquired some of Malani's work for their permanent collection.  Mindy Ran interviewed her there, for WINGS and produced this program. [After listening, you can readily find many images of Malani's works as well as published interviews and videos online.]

Essential Dissent - Veterans & Allies Fast for Gaza

A-Infos Radio Project
1 month 1 week ago
On May 22nd, 2025, a coalition of military veterans, along with religious and humanitarian organizations, began a 40-day fast for Gaza with a news conference at the “Isaiah Wall” near the United Nations headquarters in New York City, then moving to the U.S. Mission to the UN. The demands of the fast, which was organized by Veterans For Peace along with 28 co-sponsoring organizations, are Full humanitarian aid to Gaza under UN authority and No more U.S. weapons to Israel. A representative number of people will fast from May 22 to June 30 in New York, with many others participating around the U.S. and beyond for as many days as they can. On May 20, UN Humanitarian Chief Tom Fletcher said 14,000 babies could die in Gaza within the following 48 hours. A statement from the fasters condemned the genocide, saying, “We are horrified and outraged that Israel is using starvation as a war tactic in clear violation of international law, and we condemn our government’s complicity in the genocide of the Palestinian people.”
