We'll also hear some movie music, a Zydeco Queen who got into playing music professionally in mid-life, records with star back-up singers (made before they were stars) and a new record from country singer Jeff Beadle that doesn't sound very country, bt does sound vintage.
Winter Solstice (December 21 in the Northern Hemisphere) is a physical event and it is also an occasion for ritual and contemplation. In this program, Frieda Werden asks questions of two experienced practitioners of an earth-based, women-centred religion about what they do and how they came to their vocations. They also make suggestions for privately engaging with the darkest night.

This time the Sonic Café brings you a mix of tunes so great they’re scary. Our mix pulls from the last 58 years. Listen for Madness with Our House, truly a product of the original MTV. Also Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band from 2012, Sufjan Stevens, The Belmonodos, from there 2010 Always Rumble album. Also music from Les Dudek, Hearts Nancy Wilson, and Parquet Courts pulled from 2018’s Wide Awake release. We’ll also flashback to 1966 in the Sonic Café time machine to hear Nancy Sinatra’s cover of the Beatles Daytripper. Yeah so all that plus listen for a quick mashed up of 1960’s cigarette advertising, and finally we play a great Portlandia, listen as Carrie Brownstein and Fred Armisen present the imaginary NPR podcast Forgotten America, Rural Footprints, funny stuff ‘cause ahh it sounds so authentic. What is it about the words we speak that convey concepts, nuances, ideas and sometimes even start wars? Where do they come from, what is their history and how do they shape our minds and ability to communicate? These are just some of the questions we asked Professor John McWhorter, author of “Our Magnificent Bastard Tongue,” when we spoke with him from his home in New Jersey on December 1, 2008.
The book Professor McWhorter recommends is “Ziegfeld: The Man Who Invented Show Business,” by Ethan Morddenn.
This week, on the Global|Research News Hour, with world tensions frightening us and leading to embrace the pandemic treaty and the Pact for the Future among other arguably technocratic remedies to the classic Hegelian problem reaction solution, we explore the dynamics of the recent scare known as Pandemic, learn from similar suggested versions in history, and source out ways of preparing ourselves for a possible totalitarian dynamic playing out in the near future. Our first guest, Dr Bryan Ardis, talks about his own experiences within the medical care system within the United States and his considering a reason other than COVID-19 to the high death toll over the last few years. Then we speak to researcher Mattias Desmet about the psychological state he saw vast sectors of the Global Population subjected to and how it, together with propaganda, linked us to Totalitarian frameworks for a new technocracy. Finally, UK former political figure James Ferguson speaks to us about his organization and how it attempts to liberate us from the gradual allure of giving up our freedoms and being happy.
