You may be hearing a lot more about the Patriot Act in the coming weeks. That's because parts of the Act are due to expire at the end of this year, and Congress will be considering proposals to renew the law as early as next week. As President Bush and administration officials are urging Congress to renew and expand the intrusive legislation, civil liberties advocates around the country are stepping up their efforts to educate the public, and congressional lawmakers, about the negative impact of the law on civil liberties.

In June, public school students in Philadelphia received letters from the superintendent explaining what they would be expected to study in the coming year. This is an annual event, and especially important for incoming freshman because in their letters, the school will out-line their graduation requirements. This year the letter went a little like this: 3 courses in math, 4 courses in English, 3 courses in science, 3 courses in history and one course in African-American studies...African-American Studies? This is new.

Almost half of American teenagers are sexually active. What does Bush and his Health and Human Services Administration recommend? If they’re already having sex, fine, they can use contraception. But if they’re not having sex yet, don’t tell them about contraception, just make them promise not to have sex. Actually, that doesn’t work.
