This Way Out - Erik Piepenburg’s “Dining Out” & global LGBTQ news!

A-Infos Radio Project
A unique history of queer people meeting and eating; dozens of Euro-Parliament members plan to defy Orban’s Budapest Pride ban, U.K. trans women can now be strip-searched by male cops, the dismissal of a gay Venezuelan’s U.S. asylum case stymies due process, but an endangered gay Guatemalan man wins protection from a U.S. federal court, and men in dresses will still sashay through the Kennedy Center’s drag ban. All that and more this week when you discover “This Way Out.”

Indigenous in the News - June 2 - Indigenous in the News: "Rivers of Grass: Sasha Wortzel and the Miccosukee Connection"

Indigenous in the News: "Rivers of Grass: Sasha Wortzel and the Miccosukee Connection" Today we welcome Sasha Wortzel—filmmaker, artist, and storyteller whose work explores the intersections of memory, land, and identity. Her latest film, Rivers of Grass, takes us deep into the Florida Everglades, where ecology, history, and Indigenous resistance converge. With a poetic lens and powerful collaborations, Sasha brings forward stories that connect us to place, purpose, and preservation. About Sasha: Sasha Wortzel's upcoming film Rivers of Grass is a poetic and immersive exploration of the Florida Everglades, blending environmental history, personal memory, and queer identity. The film draws inspiration from the writings of Marjory Stoneman Douglas, the environmentalist who famously dubbed the Everglades a "river of grass," and incorporates contemporary voices of those who call the region home. Wortzel, a Florida native and 2017 AIRIE (Artists in Residence in Everglades) fellow, is known for her multidisciplinary work that delves into the intersections of ecology, memory, and marginalized histories. Her approach often involves a blend of documentary and experimental techniques, aiming to illuminate the layered narratives embedded in landscapes. In 2024, an installation featuring film stills from Rivers of Grass was showcased at Oregon State University’s PRAx Lightboxes, in conjunction with the exhibition How to Carry Water. This installation offered audiences a glimpse into the film's visual and thematic elements, highlighting Wortzel's focus on the Everglades' past and present. While a specific release date for the full film has not been announced, the ongoing exhibitions and Wortzel's active engagement with environmental and artistic communities suggest that Rivers of Grass will continue to be presented in various formats. For updates on screenings or related events, following Wortzel's official channels or institutions like AIRIE and PRAx would be beneficial. The United States' unwavering loyalty to Israel has come at a devastating cost—one paid in Palestinian lives, displacement, and suffering. For decades, the U.S. has provided billions in military aid, diplomatic cover, and political backing, ensuring that Israel remains shielded from accountability, even as its actions in Gaza and the West Bank grow increasingly brutal. This loyalty has manifested in unconditional arms shipments, vetoes against UN resolutions condemning Israeli war crimes, and the suppression of pro-Palestinian activism within the U.S. itself. Even as international courts begin to recognize Israel’s violations of human rights, Washington remains hesitant to impose consequences. However, cracks are beginning to form. Public opinion in the U.S. is shifting, with growing numbers of Americans questioning their government’s blind support for Israel, especially as images of mass starvation, bombed hospitals, and murdered civilians flood social media. Younger generations, in particular, are rejecting the traditional narrative, demanding an end to military funding and calling for Palestinian liberation. Despite this shift, the suffering continues. Palestinians are being arrested for protesting, students are punished for speaking out, and activists are silenced. The cost of U.S. loyalty to Israel is measured in destroyed homes, lost futures, and the blood of innocent civilians. The question remains: how much longer will this loyalty endure before justice prevails?

The Sonic Cafe - Sonic Café #437/Back to the Jazz Club

A-Infos Radio Project

Sonic Café, that was the legendary tenor sax man Joe Henderson with Soulville to kick off our trip Back to the Jazz Club. It’s been awhile since we’ve visited, even though it’s just down the stairs to the basement here at the Sonic Café. Hey, I’m your host Scott Clark and this is episode 437. So yeah, this time the Sonic Café goes Back to the Jazz Club, as we present a great mix of mostly vintage jazz, with a couple of modern tracks tossed in along the way. Listen for Horace Silver, Anita O’Day with Just in Time, the Bobby Sanabria Big Band, the amazing Art Pepper, David Sanborn, Elise Trouw, with a great solo acoustic take on the Girl from Ipanema. Plus Sonny Stitt with the amazing Bennie Green on trombone, and ahh the list goes on. Oh and listen for piano man Bill Evans with his take on how jazz musicians can easily play rock, but rock musicians can’t play jazz, an interesting observation, followed by Bill playing what he calls the Twelve Tone Tune, I guess just to mess with rock folks a bit. So yeah, all that and more as the Sonic Café goes back to the jazz club, let’s dive in with Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers, this is Moanin’ and we’re the Sonic Café.
