TUC Radio - Marilyn Waring: Our economic system assigns no value to peace – Archive ONE

A-Infos Radio Project
1 week 6 days ago
Marilyn Waring’s work and inspiring life are described in a documentary film by Terre Nash. I’m bringing back the soundtrack of this film to support a debate on the unquestioned need for economic growth at all cost and on what course to take to end the wars. At age 22 (in 1974) Marilyn Waring became the youngest member of the New Zealand Parliament. She chaired the prestigious Public Expenditures Committee and became familiar with the Gross Domestic Product system and decided to disclose its pathologies in a film, her teachings at AUT University in Auckland and really her life as a feminist economist. The film, “Who’s Counting” traces her quest to explore how the fate of women and of the earth are irrevocably tied up with the deadly pursuit of economic growth. Marilyn Waring was shocked and dismayed when she learned that all countries that are members of the UN are forced to keep their books and design their budgets under the system of National Income Accounting. This GDP system counts only cash transactions in the market and recognizes no value other than money. This means there is no value to peace and to the preservation of the environment.

Sea Change Radio - Shon Hiatt: Lithium and the Salton Sea

A-Infos Radio Project
1 week 6 days ago
Lithium - it's the third element on the periodic table, but most of us don't know too much about it besides that it's in electric car batteries. This week on Sea Change Radio, we welcome University of Southern California Business Professor Shon Hiatt to learn more about the lithium industry - how this mineral is mined, its importance to the energy and transportation sectors, and why lithium’s market price has collapsed over the past few years. We use the enormous lithium deposits in Southern California’s Salton Sea as a jumping off point for a larger conversation about all things lithium, including the environmental impacts of its extraction.

Taylor Report - Commentary on Iran

A-Infos Radio Project
Israel's 'pre-emptive' strike ought to sober everyone. Israel is armed with nuclear weapons. As Jeffrey Sachs pointed out, the reason this is all unfolding, and the names of the countries involved, is because of the British Empire. As the Anglo-French alliance prevailed in World War I, defeating the Ottomans, the British and French divided the spoils amongst themselves. They put in the kings they wanted, to be given authority under their empires. There is an odd idea that these local entities have been running things in West Asia. In fact, the whole Levant belongs to Western imperialism, and they are not letting it go. It has no connection to who happens to be a head-of-state in the region. There was an idea that, with Iran, there would be a "deal." We debase ourselves as Canadians when we accept this language. Interactions between states are supposed to involved international law and the UN Charter. But in the world of Mar-a-lago, it's just a "deal." And a "deal" is just as good as a nod or handshake from Trump. Trump has said himself that he knew Israel was going to attack. And if you follow what he says, the so-called "talks" and so-called "deal," if you look at the language, said that Iran would have to completely abandon its nuclear program. Trump literally said regarding the nuclear infrastructure that "we can blow it up." Now, we are told that Israel is unable to completely remove that infrastructure without U.S-supplied bunker-busters. These are the same bombs used to kill the Lebanese resistance leader, and are likely to be provided. There will be no change in policy. It is as with NATO, which wants to expand military operations into Asia, a machine with no off-switch. It is an aggressive operation, and has been since the time of Sitting Bull. Minister Anand perfectly stated things from the vassal point-of-view: we want the two parties to not expand the fighting and negotiate results. But it included the paragraph, that we are concerned about the nuclear program of the Islamic Republic. Full stop: they’re 'concerned' about the nuclear program of the Islamic Republic, but they are not concerned about Israel's nuclear program. Israel has hundreds of nuclear weapons, and the finest delivery mechanisms that America could pass on to them. The bargain of Anglo-French tutelage was that Israel would always have more advanced weaponry than the neighbouring states. We cannot even discuss (not even the NDP) Israel's nuclear weapons, and practicing assassinations throughout the region and the neighbourhood. Some years ago, Iraq had wanted a nuclear program, under international inspection. Israel disagreed, and blew up the Iraqi installation. Iraq's right under the NPT was taken away, because Washington and Tel Aviv decided to. And Iran's is the most inspected program in the region. There has been no inspection of Israel's nuclear capacity. They are not a member of the non-proliferation treaty. And, in Canada, no leader of any party chooses to talk about it. That which they choose not to talk about is probably the most important thing. Iran's program was initially started by the West's own vassal, the Shah. Iran inherited this sharing. In order to have peaceful relations with the Western powers, Iran consented to be inspected. So what do we have now? What we have now is that Iran is being attacked, and their scientists - civilians, have been murdered. And all the neighbouring states have been bombed and attacked by Israel: Iraq, Libya, Syria, Tunisia will tell you about bombs and assassinations. And the G7, talking about being independent from Trump, will do everything he says. As Trump tariffs Canadian steel and aluminum, to break our back, Carney says Canada needs to worry about China.

Indigenous in the News - June 16 - “Guarding the Ancestors in Florida: A Conversation with AIM Leader Robert Rosa”

A-Infos Radio Project
2 weeks 1 day ago
"On this week’s edition of Indigenous in the News, we’re honored to welcome a passionate advocate, organizer, and protector of Indigenous rights — Robert Rosa, President of the American Indian Movement Central Florida. Robert has been on the frontlines of some of Florida’s most urgent struggles involving sacred lands, burial site desecration, and the ongoing failure of institutions to uphold Native sovereignty and federal protections like the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act — known as NAGPRA. As a leader within AIM, Robert has worked tirelessly to hold contractors, developers, and public officials accountable when sacred Indigenous burial sites are threatened or destroyed. His work isn’t just about resistance — it’s about education, justice, and healing. Today, he joins us to shed light on the battles unfolding across Florida where Native history is being bulldozed in the name of profit — and to share how community members, tribal nations, and allies can take action to protect the ancestors and the laws that were meant to honor them. INDIGENOUS IN THE NEWS WITH ROBERT ROSA ABOUT ROBERT ROSA Robert Rosa is the dedicated President of the American Indian Movement (AIM) Central Florida chapter and an active advocate for the protection of Indigenous heritage and sacred sites. Under his leadership, AIM Central Florida has successfully intervened in multiple cases where developers attempted to disturb Native mounds and burial grounds. Notably, in February 2023, Rosa played a key role in persuading Jupiter's Historical Review Board to deny a permit for excavation at a site containing ancient Indian mounds, resulting in the land’s protection. A member of the Taino community, Rosa has also worked collaboratively with Miccosukee and Seminole tribal representatives to challenge unauthorized digs across the region, emphasizing respect for ancestral lands and cultural sovereignty seminoletribune.org. He is known for persistent public advocacy, attending local government meetings, raising community awareness, and helping secure protections at sites with deep historical significance . Committed to preserving these sacred spaces, Rosa continues to lead grassroots campaigns across Central Florida—challenging developers, mobilizing allies, and ensuring that Indigenous voices are central to decisions about land use and cultural heritage. CONTACT AIM CENTRAL FLORIDA Email: aimcfchapter@gmail.com Facebook: www.facebook.com/AIMCentralFlorida Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/company/american-indian-movement-central-florida/?viewAsMember=true ABOUT NAGPRA Purpose To protect Native American burial sites on federal and tribal lands. To ensure that Native communities can reclaim ancestral remains and sacred items from museums and federal institutions. To prevent construction and development projects from disturbing Native graves without proper consultation and procedures. Who Must Comply Federal agencies Public museums that receive federal funding Developers or contractors working on federal or tribal lands Main Requirements Inventory and Repatriation Museums must inventory and identify Native remains and objects in their collections. Institutions must notify and work with tribes affiliated with those items for their return. Discovery on Federal or Tribal Lands If Native human remains or cultural items are discovered on federal or tribal land, the agency or contractor must: Immediately stop all activity. Notify the appropriate tribes. Follow a respectful process for possible repatriation or reburial. Consultation with Tribes Before any project that might impact cultural sites, agencies are required to consult with affiliated Native nations. Penalties Institutions that fail to comply can face civil penalties, lawsuits, and loss of federal funding. Unauthorized excavation or possession of remains or sacred objects can result in criminal prosecution under related laws like the Archaeological Resources Protection Act (ARPA). Limitations and Challenges NAGPRA only applies on federal or tribal lands, not private property—this is a major loophole. Enforcement is often slow, inconsistent, or ignored. Developers sometimes evade the law through poor oversight or weak local enforcement. Why It Matters For Native communities, NAGPRA is more than a legal tool — it’s about respecting ancestors, preserving identity,

The Buck Starts Here - John Quincy Adams: Pt. II

A-Infos Radio Project
2 weeks 1 day ago
Before John Quincy Adams became America’s most forgettable president, he was basically a Founding Father Nepo Baby turned globe-trotting prodigy. In this episode, Kyle and Eric dive into JQA’s chaotic and impressive early life—getting inoculated before vaccines were cool, becoming a teenage diplomat fluent in multiple languages, and turning down a seat on the Supreme Court because he “didn’t feel like it.” We’re talking European power moves, Founding Father family drama, and alleged skinny-dipping in colonial streams. If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to grow up journaling every historical moment and getting career advice from Ben Franklin, this one’s for you. Hit play to hear why John Quincy Adams peaked way before the White House.

John Quincy Adams: fluent in diplomacy, allergic to BS, and way too smart for the room. In this episode, we kick off our JQA series with a look at the man who basically wrote American foreign policy, got wrecked by Congress during his presidency, and came back swinging as the “Madman from Massachusetts.” Eric’s basically doing a séance from Quincy City Hall, Kyle’s trying to keep things on track, and somewhere in the background, a naked JQA is swimming in the Potomac, judging us all. Come for the anti-slavery fury, stay for the intellectual mic drops—this one’s got heat.

The Buck Starts Here - James Monroe: Pt. IV

A-Infos Radio Project
2 weeks 1 day ago
Surprise! James Monroe didn’t write the Monroe Doctrine—John Quincy Adams did... then he refused to take credit like the ultimate 1820s ghostwriter. In this episode, Kyle and Eric dig into the foreign policy flex that told Europe to stay outta the Western Hemisphere (while we quietly kept receipts). We break down the real reason the doctrine was written (hint: hi, Russia), why Latin America loved the idea but side-eyed our follow-through, and how the U.S. turned “no new colonies” into “we run this hemisphere now.” From British drama to Venezuelan oil beefs, we’re covering it all—plus, a presidential power ranking that might just put Monroe in GOAT contention. You’ll laugh. You’ll learn. You might hear the word “non-colonialization” butchered more than once.

Sally Roesch Wagner died June 11th, 2025, at nearly 83 years old. She is renowned for her deep research into the women's suffrage movement in the United States, its inspiration from first nations women, and the deep division created by allying with right-wing religious and racist women. Sally recovered the erased history of Matilda Joslyn Gage, an adopted member of an indigenous band who saw true gender equality and who blamed western patriarchal religion for women's oppression. Sally publicly performed as Gage and as Elizabeth Cady Stanton. She also taught, and held a doctorate in Women's Studies and History of Consciousness.

Think you know James Monroe? Think again. In this fiery episode, Kyle and Eric spill the historical tea on the 5th President of the United States, diving deep into the Monroe Doctrine, territorial expansion, and the absolute trainwreck that was the Panic of 1819 — aka America’s first big economic flop. We’re talking federal power, tariff drama, and the not-so-United States flexing on each other pre-Civil War. You’ll get the lowdown on Andrew Jackson’s unauthorized chaos in Florida, the founding of Liberia, and the messy reality behind the Missouri Compromise. Oh, and did we mention presidential pets? Yeah, that’s in here too. This episode is a wild ride through early American economics, international diplomacy, and all the hot takes they don’t teach you in school. Whether you're a history buff, policy wonk, or just here for the tea, this one’s got it all.

Get ready for a presidential glow-up like no other. In this episode, hosts Eric Mason and Kyle take you deep into the world of James Monroe, the fifth President of the United States—and the face of what was questionably called the Era of Good Feelings. Spoiler: it wasn’t all sunshine and unity. We’re unpacking Monroe’s crushing win over Rufus King in the 1816 election, the forgotten greatness of Vice President Daniel Tompkins (a broke abolitionist hero), and Monroe’s awkward attempt at a “national unity” tour that stirred up more tension than it solved. It’s a wild ride through early American politics: *The founding fathers’ financial failures—yep, a bunch of them died broke *The juicy Reynolds Affair scandal that shook the nation *Monroe’s underrated but wildly effective cabinet *His rivalry with Alexander Hamilton and all the ego that came with it *And the quiet but powerful influence of Elizabeth Monroe, a First Lady who brought French elegance and diplomatic finesse to the White House
