The United States has the highest per capita incarceration rate of any country in the world. In the state of Washington alone, prison rates have roughly tripled since the mid-1970s. Do these statistics make for safer communities?

A local Seattle nonprofit group is thinking outside the cell. The Freedom Project is challenging the assumption that locking people away is the only answer to preventing crime. Whether it’s inside prisons holding workshops, or on the outside, organizing support groups, the Freedom Project wants to provide prisoners with the training and tools they need to lead peaceful, happy lives. Unlike most other prison rehabilitation programs, The Freedom Project is a secular organization, though they do encourage spiritual practice, however one might define that.
