Aboriginal Sovereignty Tour 2006 - From the newswire...

"When our people are dying in the thousands, due to violence, stress related disease and third world conditions; we can’t sit back and do nothing. The future is our children’s and the generations to come. As an Aboriginal woman, mother and grandmother I hope to make the country better for all our kids. We want freedom from poverty, oppression and genocide. This is about human rights. We need our sovereign rights recognised"... Aunty Susan Rankin - 2005.

Initiated by Jaara elder Aunty Sue Rankin, the Sovereign Tour 2006 is approx a year long project - starting with a 6 week walk and then turning into major convoy...for grassroots elders/families and activists - learning, sharing, connecting and standing strong with Aboriginal people and communities across the continent.

The group have received invitations and endorsement from around the continent and is now an affiliate of Friends of the Earth Australia. There are tonnes of ways people can help out – from the small to the expansive - contribute your ideas, skills and passion for Aboriginal Sovereignty!

The "sovereign tour" is leaving from the Aboriginal Tent Embassy in Canberra Jan 06, walking via communities along the Murray river, stopping in with the Yorta Yorta at the Barmah Beats festival and converging in Melbourne for the STOLENWEALTH GAMES 2006 actions in March and then travelling on to communities and major centres across Australia. We want to reconnect with culture and spirituality; honouring ancestor spirits and creation. And generate spaces along the way for sharing information and skills, allowing self-expression through art and music, developing creative resistance and producing good quality, independent grassroots media.

We will take witness to problems - social and environmental at the local, national and international levels. From our own experiences and inspiration gained along the way we will attempt to demonstrate ways communities can break the dependence on government funding, become autonomous, reclaim sovereign rights and re-develop self-sufficient, sustainable, and self-empowered communities.

With the generosity of those we are yet to meet, we aim to record the stories and experiences of those not getting heard. We will share all the horrors of Aboriginal genocide to the world and hope to link together a strong continent-wide grassroots network of people working towards stopping genocide and bringing about social justice and recognition of sovereignty.
