Two women asked to tell their story about trying to get out of the Reliant Center area on Friday night, September 16, 2005 at about 11:40 pm. Aired on KH5XIM, 95.3 fm, Dome City, TX, media lot 12. KAMP - Katrina Alternate Media Project - Evacuation Radio Services
This turned out to be my last shift on the air for KH5XIM, 95.3 fm, Dome City, TX. I didn't know it at the time. I thought I'd be back in the morning.
I had decided we were all in the need of a little Leon. It had been a hard week for all of us. I treated us to hearing "Delta Lady" and "Lady Blue" by Leon Russell, especially for those stuck on Friday night in this mess called Dome City. I figured, they know Leon, I know how good listening to Leon can be at times. We all could use a little Leon, it was Friday night, after all.
So, I put on a CD with the appropriate dosage of Leon in the player, and then went outside the Airstream to stretch my legs. The media lot was down to the SBC robot, the luxury RV of ABC's. (Pssst..., any corporate watchers out there...I can verify nobody threw any wild parties or pulled any shenanigans in the RV after hours. wink!)

I told the Channel 13 guy proudly, who happened to like our set up very much, that we were mobile too now.
It was going on midnight, I looked over and saw a young girl of about 16 and another woman pushing a huge long cart piled with clothes and such. The gates are closed to them, the only passage at that point being through a single person turnstile.
As I got closer, the woman asked if I was with "that radio station." I said, "Yes, indeed ma'am. Can I help you?"
She said, "I want to tell you my story about trying to get out of here." I told her I would be glad to listen, and we went into the station to record their words. And here they are....just trying to get out.
I hope they did.
