TEHRAN Feb. 23 (Mehr News Agency) –- Iranian music and music of Ashura in Iran have never been separated, since in fact the music is rooted in religion, said musician Davud Ganje’i.
Human beings have always had a great need to achieve wisdom, spirituality, and mysticism accompanied with songs and melodies throughout the history.
Desire is instinctive, he added, “If we have a glance at the music of Ashura (the day when Imam Hussein (AS) and his companions who were martyred), we will find out all the melodies have a divine source. But these days, some have mixed this divine source with cheap music, which of course cannot succeed.”
“When we are talking of justice, honesty, and names of our Imams like Imam Hussein (AS), we must use the songs and melodies which will suit their high divine positions. It is not only a matter of art, but a matter of philosophy, in which ignoring the principles of music suitable with Ashura, will cause a decline in the society,” Ganje’i told ISNA.
Years ago, the melodies, nohehs (religious passion singing) and ta’zieh (Persian passion plays) were made based on Iranian dastgah (the system of teaching Iranian classical music) that had an affinity to society that was why every day of the ten-day mourning had its own melody.
Ganje’i is saddened that today some who have the least knowledge of music, try to make religious music. For example, in composing the symphony of Ashura, the original melody is replaced by technology while the original music is rooted in the divine source.
He concluded that it is of great importance for a maddah (narrator of tragedy of Karbala) to avoid making use of cheap music and try to find and compose the original divine melodies.
