Summer Radio Camps at Free Radio Berkeley

Imagine attending a summer camp and returning home with the essential equipment required to set up a low power community broadcast station capable of covering a radius of 6 to 10 miles. This is exactly what can happen if you attend one of the Summer Radio Camps offered by Free Radio Berkeley. Conveniently scheduled for 3 Monday holiday weekends and one non-holiday weekend, these 4 day (Friday-Monday) summer camp workshops teach you how to build a 40 watt FM broadcast transmitter and other related equipment such as antennas. Further, you will be instructed in how to create and setup a low power community FM broadcast station.

With an emphasis on direct, hands-on learning, you will learn how to solder, identify electronic components, assemble a 40 watt transmitter from a kit of parts, build and tune an antenna, properly setup and test broadcast equipment and much more. Further, you will be given an overview of basic electronics and broadcast engineering. A workshop fee of $150-$200 sliding scale is charged. At the end of the radio camp session you may purchase the 40 watt transmitter for $350 – the cost of the kits involved.

Summer Radio Camps are held at Free Radio Berkeley’s facility in Oakland, California. Sessions run from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
