Tentative, short radio script describing union and NGO protest in Quebec City on April 21st.

On Saturday, tens of thousands of people demonstrated peacefully in Quebec City against the FTAA and the Summit of the Americas. Only the beginning of the protest passed near the Summit’s security perimeter. Marchers witnessed clouds of tear gas wafting down the hill from the old city; literally, you could smell the tension in the air. The demo then turned and headed for a rallying point far away from the downtown core.

Citizens from all over the Americas have gathered in Quebec City for the Second Peoples' Summit of the Americas. The Peoples' Summit, put on by the Hemispheric Social Alliance, includes forums on human rights, labor, the environment, indiginous rights, poverty, women's rights, agriculture and communications. The Summit was designed to work on building a proposal to counter the FTAA, not just criticize it. {suggested anchor intro}{This is 3:05 min.}

A collection of Independent Media Center (IMC) audio teams is planning on

producing three half hour programs about the Free Trade Area of the Americas

and how it effects local communities around the Americas.

On April 20th-22nd the Summit of the Americas is meeting in Quebec City to

discuss the largest free trade zone ever, and activists from all over the

hemisphere will be protesting the meeting and FTAA, both in Quebec and in

their local communities.
