The Sonic Cafe - Sonic Café #310/You Are Here

A-Infos Radio Project
3 months 1 week ago
Sonic café, with an ode to the mosquito, music from the Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs. So ahh what’s goin’ on? I’m Scott Clark and this is episode 310. This time the Sonic Café looks at really how tiny and insignificant we are with a thing we’ll call You Are Here. The nice folks over at Pursuit of Wonder will point out how really tiny we all are, and how really tiny this rock we liv on is in comparison to the massive cosmos of unfathomable size and scale we call space, and how all life is really unexplainable and really means nothing at all. So there point is stop stressing, relax and enjoy the hilarious absurdity of this whole existence. We’ve wrapped there observations in a music mix pulled from the last 23 years including Beck, Avicii, Kenny Wayne Sheperd, The Weather Station, Sonya Kitchell, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard and of course many more. Oh and before we forget a cosmos sized welcome to our latest sponsor. If you’re an immigrant, or planning a trip to the USA, you’ll need to learn how to speak real ‘Merican. That’s where the folks from Learn Redneck Pretty Fast come to rescue. Listen get your Learn Redneck Pretty Fast home study course. All that and probably some other neat stuff just ahead on You Are Here and ahh so are we, way out her in the Pacific Northwest. Here’s Keuning with a tune called Stuck Here On Earth, which ahh fits right in with our theme. As always, we’re the Sonic Café.

A-Infos Radio Project
3 months 1 week ago
"All Things Cage" is a weekly program featuring conversations between Laura Kuhn, Director of the John Cage Trust, and Cage experts and enthusiasts from around the world. If youd like to propose a guest or a topic for a future program, write directly to Laura at lkuhn@johncage.org.Laura Kuhn presents the first recording of John Cages Europera 5, preceded by her reading Recollections of the Premiere Performance by Yvar Mikhashoff. This recording of Europera 5 was produced by Brian Brandt and released on the Mode Records label as Mode 36 in 1995, with performers Yvar Mikhashoff, Martha Herr, Gary Burgess, Jan Williams, and Don Metz. Europera 5 is the last and most diminutive of Cages operas " preceded by Europeras 1 & 2 (1984-1987) and Europeras 3 & 4 (1991) " and was instigated by pianist Yvar Mikashoffs desire for a small, more practical and portable, and more easily performed work in the series, which had its premiere in Buffalo at the North American New Musical Festival on April 12, 1991.

SIPS – On this episode we discuss a journey, with coffee. We often get approached by people that express how much they enjoy coffee but feel like there is more. Like where I go next, what should I try now, and what should I avoid, other than Scott. You’re in a rut, trust us. It’s easy to drift into a routine with coffee. We’ll help you recognize effect vs. flavor. Where is all of this going?

TUC Radio - President John F. Kennedy’s Speech for Peace

A-Infos Radio Project
3 months 1 week ago
Considered one of his most visionary and courageous speeches, Kennedy outlined a way to stop an imminent nuclear disaster, and beyond that find a path to world peace and nuclear disarmament. The historic records give much of the credit to Kennedy for avoiding a nuclear war with the Soviet Union in 1962 over nuclear missiles in Cuba and Turkey during the Cuban Missile Crisis. On the 60th anniversary of the Missile Crisis, that brought the world closer to nuclear war than ever, analysts say that history repeats itself now, in October 2022. The two largest nuclear powers, the US and Russia, are in confrontation over Ukraine. And instead of de-escalating all sides in this conflict turn up the heat. On October 17, 2022, the United States and NATO launched nuclear war games in the skies above Belgium, the United Kingdom and the North Sea. Russia’s military is set to stage its own annual nuclear exercise called “Thunder” along Russia’s northwestern coast. And a spokesperson for President Putin said that the four territories of Ukraine that Russia annexed will fall under the protection of Russia’s nuclear arsenal. This speech has become the most often quoted historic document during the escalation of the war over Ukraine. The parallels are shocking and the specific proposals for de-escalation are as valid and inspiring as they were in the aftermath of the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962.

Sea Change Radio - Defenseless: Daniel Medwed on Incarcerated Innocents

A-Infos Radio Project
3 months 1 week ago
Many followers of the highly publicized Adnan Syed case were delighted to see an innocent man set free after over two decades behind bars. But the case also highlighted some troubling aspects of American justice, or in Syed’s case, injustice. This week on Sea Change Radio, we speak to Daniel Medwed, a law professor at Northeastern University and an innocence advocate. His new book, “Barred: Why the Innocent Can't Get Out of Prison,” takes an in-depth look at how difficult it is for wrongful convictions to be overturned in this country. We examine the Syed case, learn about the plight of Harry Miller, and expose an ineffective system that tilts the scales against the most vulnerable.
