- Fight For The Protect Chicago Budget Rally

1 month 1 week ago
Chicago's next City Budget comes up for a vote shortly. The financial crisis it addresses, created in part by the Trump Administration, but mostly by the racism and class subservience of past administrations that privatized and cut city services, closed schools and mental health clinics and covered up police torture, abuse, and murder, to the tune of a billion and a half dollars in civil judgments over the past 14 years, but factually since 1972. The financial short fall due to their past deference to banks, real estate developers, and criminal schemes, now falls on the shoulders of only the second progressive Black mayor in Chicago's history; some 40 years after Harold Washington's historic peoples coalition victory. A revolution in its day, not unlike that which recently put New York State congressman Zohran Mamdani into the Mayor's office of New York City. Mayor Brandon Johnson's The Protect Chicago Budget insists that working people and school children will not be made to carry the burden as past administrations have done. It protects gains in public mental health services, crisis response programs and affordable housing. It raises no property tax, water and garbage tax or tax on grocery's which will follow should the corporations and wealthy win the day with a massive misinformation campaign. Speakers explain the tiny tax on the richest corporations and billionaires, how it would cover the revenue short fall, along with a surplus from the much abused TIF District tax which not long after it was established to support redevelopment in blighted communities, became a slush fund for downtown developers of high end projects. The Protect Chicago Budget would see the wealthiest in Chicago pay their fare share. But a handful of self professed progressive Aldermen are opposing reinstating the employee “head tax” which applies to only the largest of corporations . Corporations like Amazon, Google and McDonalds who profit from the city, its people and its commons, add to the operational costs, but pay little to their maintenance. Raising taxes on working people and cutting service to constituents appears their leaning. Educating them to support the interests of working families with their vote is the goal of the rally. Pastor Troy Venning , Quinn Chapel AME Church, the first black congregation in the city of Chicago provides a welcome, reminding the assembled of the historic role the church and members undertook in the turbulent 1850's, one that continues through today, and its parallel in their mission in today's turbulent times. t

Essential Dissent - Joshua Clark Davis - Police Against the Movement

1 month 1 week ago
A talk by author Joshua Clark Davis to mark the publication of his book of the same name. Joshua Clark Davis is an associate professor of U.S. history at the University of Baltimore, and his research has earned awards from the Fulbright Program, the Silvers Foundation, and the NEH Public Scholars Program. He's joined by moderator Chenjerai Kumanyika, host of the podcast Empire City, and son of Herb Callendar, a '60s era civil rights activist who later changed his name to Makaza Kumanyika. Joshua Clark Davis' book, Police Against the Movement, shatters one of the most pernicious myths about the 1960s: that the civil rights movement endured police violence without fighting it. Instead, activists confronted police abuses head-on, staging sit-ins at precinct stations, picketing department headquarters, and blocking traffic to protest officer misdeeds. In return, organizers found themselves the targets of overwhelming political repression in the form of police surveillance, infiltration by undercover officers, and retaliatory prosecutions aimed at derailing their movement. The talk took place on November 6, 2025 at The Word Is Change, a radical bookstore in Brooklyn, NY. https://www.thewordischange.com/

This Week In Palestine - TWIP-251116

1 month 1 week ago
Today, we begin with a question that refuses to die: Why has the world ganged up on Palestine? Why have more than sixty countries—powerful, wealthy, and self-proclaimed defenders of human rights—lined up behind Israel as it wages a campaign of annihilation against a besieged, stateless people? This is not just war. This is genocide. And it is not being committed in isolation. It is being funded, armed, and politically shielded by a global coalition of complicity. According to UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese’s report, over 60 member states have contributed to Israel’s assault on Gaza—through weapons, surveillance tech, military aid, and diplomatic cover. These include the United States, Germany, the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Canada, and Australia. But also Arab states like Egypt, Jordan, and the UAE, who enforce the blockade, normalize relations, and offer logistical support. Together, they have enabled the destruction of homes, hospitals, schools, water systems, and entire families. Together, they have tried to erase Gaza from the map. And together, they have failed. Because the people remain. Holding on to every grain of sand. Holding on to the name: Palestine. We demand answers. Why does the world help Zionists steal the land from its rightful inhabitants? Why do they reward apartheid with trade deals, arms contracts, and diplomatic immunity? Why do they silence the truth, criminalize solidarity, and punish resistance? This is not just about Palestine. It’s about the moral collapse of the international order. It’s about the Genocide Convention being shredded in real time. It’s about the cost of silence—and the price of complicity. So today, we name the countries. We trace the weapons. We follow the money. And we ask the question that history will not forgive us for ignoring: Why did the world choose genocide over justice? Stay with us. This is This Week in Palestine. And this is where the silence ends.
