Electronic Intifada Radio - 1000 days of genocide

A-Infos Radio Project
50 minutes 5 seconds ago
One thousand days have passed since Israel's continuing genocide in Gaza began. More than 73,000 Palestinians have been confirmed killed, according to the Gaza health ministry -- an average of about 73 per day. This conservative estimate does not include indirect deaths from disease, malnutrition, lack of clean water and other outcomes of the genocide. Hosts Nora Barrows-Friedman and Ali Abunimah speak with Asem Alnabeh to mark this grim milestone. He is an engineer, PhD researcher, Alaraby TV correspondent in Gaza and a long-time contributor to The Electronic Intifada. As Israel intensifies its attacks on Lebanon, a U.S.-backed framework agreement is facing fierce rejection from the Lebanese resistance, which says the proposal amounts to a demand for surrender rather than a path to peace. The Electronic Intifada’s contributor Roqayah Chameseddine reports from southern Lebanon. “Sustainable Childhood” courses don’t teach a Gaza mother how to stop the F16 nor change the path of a missile. Israa Mashharawi’s article ‘Stable childhood is out of reach in Gaza’ takes a closer look.

A-Infos Radio Project
4 hours 45 minutes ago
little radio café, where we blend a weekly mix of eclectic music, comedy, and pop culture. I’m your host, Scott Clark, and this is episode 490. This time, the Sonic Café explores what happens when your doctor hits you with a diagnosis no one wants to hear—yep, you’re ugly. Comedian Bengt Washburn shares that awkward medical moment with us. Our music mix spans 38 years and really cooks! Listen for Butch Walker, Katie Herzig, Tom Wolfe, Aerosmith, Cheap Trick, U2, and more. We’ll also serve up comedy shorts from Andy Huggins and Don McMillan, plus a surprising backstory on the California Raisins, in another installment of Crazy Music Facts from our friends at Origins of Songs. Oh—and ever wonder why Germans always get cast as the bad guys? We’ve got answer. So let’s get started. From 2014, here’s Bryan Ferry—and as always, we’re the Sonic Café.

Radio Curious - Dr. Daniel Levitin: "Your Brain on Music Part One"

A-Infos Radio Project
15 hours 38 minutes ago
The understanding of how we humans experience music and why it plays a unique role in our lives is this topic of two interviews with Dr. Daniel Levitin, author of “This Is Your Brain on Music, The Science of a Human Obsession,” recorded from his home in Montreal, Quebec, Canada in late October 2006. Professor Levitin runs the Laboratory for Musical Perception, Cognition and Expertise at McGill University in Montreal, Canada. He asserts that our brains are hardwired for music and therefore we are all more musically equipped than we think. He says that music is an obsession at the heart of human nature, perhaps even more fundamental to our species than language. Professor Levitin believes that the music we end up liking meets our expectations of what we anticipate hearing just enough of the time that we feel rewarded, and the music that we like violates those expectations just enough of the time that we’re intrigued. In the first interview Dr. Levitin begins by describing how the human brain learns to distinguish between music and language. The second interview begins with a discussion of what happens when people listen to music they like. Professor Daniel Levitin’s website is www.yourbrainonmusic.com The books Dr. Daniel J. Levitin recommends are, “Another Day in the Frontal Lobe,” by Katrina Firlik, and, “The Human Stain,” by Philip Roth. Originally Broadcast: November 1, 2006 November 8, 2006
