County Workers March for a Fair Contract

''County workers provide many vital services that make Santa Cruz County a better place to live,'' one of the organizers said. ''Many of these services require a level of training and experience that are difficult to quickly replace. Workers are marching for community support to maintain community services by retaining the people who provide them.''

Native American scholar/activist Andrea Smith spoke on the topic of her new book, "Conquest:Sexual Violence and American Indian Genocide." Smith was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize and is a member of INCITE! Women of Color Against Violence.

The lecture took place at the Wealthy Street Theatre in Grand Rapids, Michigan on February 7, 2006.

The celebration of Mardi Gras in New Orleans ended on Feb. 28, the day before the scheduled evictions. Toward the end of an Associated Press article, Katrina evacuee Samuel Spade, who is currently staying in Houston, says, “With them putting on Mardi Gras, without still having not addressed the basic human needs in this city, why that’s just a slap in the face. I can’t go home, but they can have a parade? That’s ridiculous.”
