If you’re a parent trying to decide where your child should go to school, you’d prefer to have a choice, right? After all, everyone likes to have options. But the appealing rhetoric of school choice is being used by the right-wing to undermine and underfund public schools, while allocating public subsidies to wealthy families. Today on Sea Change Radio we are talking about school vouchers. Currently, eighteen states have a universal private school choice program, and more are likely on the way. But the expansion of the school voucher system has been made with minimal oversight and has led to waste, fraud, and abuse. The cost to public education is tremendous, as public revenue that would otherwise support public schools (which still educate roughly 90 percent of American students) is redirected to private, religious, and largely unregulated institutions. Our guest this week is ProPublica reporter Jennifer Smith Richards who is here to tell us what she has learned about the damaging effects of school vouchers across the country. We look at the history of the concept in the US, examine issues of abuse and discrimination in Arkansas and Florida, and discuss the very powerful messaging tool embedded in the term “school choice.”

The time has come for Libyans to close ranks, and become again a sovereign state serving all its people.

# 1 Spain won the world cup and sidelined the Trump show; soccer is a people's sport, no supersized players and real grass. #2 The ICC is a pseudo-court serving Western interests.

We mark our 2000th episode. Pete Hegseth gets trolled by U.S. Rep. Becca Balint, The Rainbow Rewinds to Judy Grahn, Vito Russo and Reverend Troy Perry and Lucia Chappelle gives advice from a 2000 episode old lesbian. In newswrap France's new rights watchdog is no friend to queer people or women, while the trans position of the U.K.'s new government is questionable and a gay German politician falls to surrogacy hypocrisy. In the U.S., the House declines to make Trump's transgender military ban permanent, but advances other anti-trans measures, and a Seattle judge keeps a historic LGBTQ+ beach nude, but curbs the bad behavior.

This is an updated archival program in memory of Cecile Pineda Cecile Pineda had come to the Unitarian Universalists Fellowship Hall in Berkeley on Hiroshima Day 2014 to support Harvey Wasserman. He campaigns to prevent the opening of nuclear power plants - to limit their operation - or to close them down. Cecile Pineda had just finished her novel: Devil’s Tango: How I Learned the Fukushima Step by Step, that the Nation’s John Nichols called: “An astonishing anatomy of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster..." Cecile Pineda died at home on August 11, 2022. Her friends and students miss her voice, her humor, her deep scientific knowledge and her rebellion - all inside her art of writing. This replay of her appearance, along with Harvey Wasserman, has an eerily contemporary cast. In April of 2026, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) approval of Diablo Canyon Power Plant’s operating license renewals, completing the federal licensing process that California initiated in 2022 under Senate Bill 846 to keep the plant online through 2030. Harvey Wasserman, still active today, continues his campaigns opposing nuclear solution to expanding power needs. DATE: I recorded this event on August 6, 2014.

Features US political science scholar, lesbian and feminist activist Dr. Jean Hardisty, founder of Political Research Associates, addressing the US National Women's Studies Association in the year 2000. Her 1999 book Mobilizing Resentment analyzed what fuels right-wing movements, including diversely-organized movements of right-wing women. Includes analysis of how racism has been restructured by the US right (a concept reaching its apotheosis during this Trump administration). Hardisty died in 2025. Her analysis, more apt than ever, lives on.
